MS buys vivendi games division?

This is starting to sound interesting. I've heard rumors for a while that MS bought valve software, and if this rumor is true it may be related. I think this woul dbe a huge purchase if it does happen. I also think it would be better to see vivendi sell of to MS that it would to EA. If EA bought them, they'd have a monopoly on RTS games with blizzard and Westwood. Anyway, i can see MS wanting to go after WOW on xbox live...

MICROSOFT TO BUY VIVENDI?

Fevered speculation points to a shock swoop by Bill Gates's company, with an announcement imminent

19:25 If insider speculation is to be believed, Microsoft has bought US publisher Vivendi, with an announcement to that effect due soon. Take a deep breath and reflect on the implications of that, if true.
Half-Life 2, Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Crash, Spyro, Lord of the Rings... Vivendi has an enormous portfolio boasting some of the biggest titles on all formats, and it would be an ultra-smart move on Microsoft's part to snap them up. Such a buyout, of course, would come at a terrifically high price, making the 365 million acquisition of Rare look like peanuts. But if anyone has the necessary funds, it's Microsoft.

Rumours regarding potential buyout targets for Microsoft are nothing new, of course, and have been spreading for months, with the likes of Sega and Capcom both mentioned in dispatches. However, talk of the Microsoft/Vivendi deal seems far more serious, with one insider suggesting the buyout could be confirmed as early as Friday.

Furthermore, an email from Universal was accidentally sent out to developers last week stating that all work on GBA titles should be suspended. The email was promptly recalled and branded an error, but could it be that this was in some way tied in with this alleged deal?

We contacted Vivendi for comment and a spokesperson told us: "We've heard all sorts of rumours over the past months - Activision, EA and many more. They'd all like to get their hands on Blizzard. I guess Microsoft are one of the few companies that has enough money."

A Microsoft spokesperson would only state: "This is a rumour and we do not comment on rumours."

If the rumours prove true, this will be a huge boost for Microsoft's soaring Xbox console, providing it with a broad spectrum of big-name games that would either appear as Xbox lead or as Xbox exclusives outright.

We'll keep you posted on all developments.

Any comments...

8) Good luck SoNEEEE!

Xbox2 is looking more and more likely to secure US and Europe next time. :D

Yeah I think that's the plan, they want to secure up some big development in north america (Bungie, Vavle, Blizzard) in Europe (Lionhead, Rare) and in japan (sega). Some of this hasn't happened yet, but it's what I think they will end up owning.

I can't see MS being interested in buying all of vivendi's gaming unit, But I can see them being interested in valve and blizzard. I can really see blizzard making a sucessfull transistion to console development with good titles, just as bungie has. Although thier roots will always be in teh PC market. I've also heard rumors that Lionhead is interested in being more secure for the future as well.

MS are going to be in the consle biz to stay, and I think they are setting Themselves up for xbox 2 software right now. They will need a lot of titles with big names for the next generation.

I know some people are goig to come in this thread screaming, MS just buys their way into everything. All I can say to that is so? what difference does it make to us? It's better than seeing developers going out of business IMO. Vivendi apparently went to MS about a purchase, and not the other way around. **All I care about is getting some new and interesting games to play.** I don't care how they go about doing that.

Next generation

US
1) Xbox2
2) PS3
3) GC2

Europe
1) Xbox2
2) PS3
3) GC2

Japan
1) PS3
2) GC
3) Xbox2

Overall, Xbox2 will own 50% of next generation marketshare, PS3 will have 35% and GC2 will have 15% of the hardcore niche population.

I see Sony setting themselves up for major failure with its unproven CELL architecture. PC, DirectX and Windows have been around for so fucking long that it aint going to take some CELL crap to overthrow them.

Hmm, I'd actually like to see this happen. There's a lot of talent in those studios, and not enough money to support them (from Vivendi as it is). MS could really do them justice with their resources...

This wouldn't be a small-fry deal though. Any guesses? I'm thinking $2-2.5 bil USD...

Perhaps MS wants to secure and leverge their western influence in the gaming world, instead of trying to 'show face' in Japan while offering Konami, Capcom, & co. disgustingly sweetheart deals.

Okay then but i am certain that Sony is done for in Western countries.

Most major Western developers are already doing great games for Xbox1, games that truly cater to Western gamers.

2003 will see the decline of US/Europe PS2 sales and it will go now till Xbox2 is release. So watch how Sony's Western market gets smaller and smaller by the day.

I am very confident Xbox2 will have all that and more.

Valve is independent and self-funded, by the way. I imagine the money they made from Half-Life/Counter-Strike/Blue Shift/etc. is enough to keep them fiscally secure for some time.

not only that, but if Halflife had come out to XBox instead of PC, it would not have done 1/3rd as well.. the magic behind the game was its modability.. turn HL2 to console, and I am going to have to kill somebody.

If M$ buys Vivendi, its stranglehold on the PC gaming market will be almost as strong as Windows on PC operating systems... o_O

- not looking forward to a "Microsoft" branded Starcraft 2.

Agreed.

MS 1st party development is already better than Sony's:

Halo, Amped, Perfect Dark, MechAssault, MS Sports

vs.

Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, 989 Studios

Picking up Blizzard would be over the top. 8)

first off, its not true, Its just another one of those insane rumors started by wishful thinking.. but if MS did get Blizzard, I personally am forming a Jihad against MS.. I will Blow up every factory the have... and I'm not even joking, my Blizzard games on my PC mean that much to me, consoling them would be a crime against humanity... anyone who thinks otherwise is twisted and pathetic

Last time I checked MS has a pretty sizeable PC games division. What makes you think they'd can all the Vivideni PC studios and make them code for Xbox? I mean, do you see an Age of Empires XBL anywhere?

It'd be a win win deal for MS Game Studios.. both for Xbox and PC.

I agree, they have lots of PC and even PC only games still in development, they're not so stupid to think they can pull of every game on Xbox just for the sake of it. and don't want to totally kill of PC gaming or anything like that. MS Game Studios know pretty well that AoM, WC3 style RTS titles are just not well suited for consoles. At best they'd try to get a possible new Diablo, maybe a new RPG or WoW out of Blizzard for XBL, and that's a big maybe as this is just a silly rumor so far...

MS isn't stupid enough to put best selling PC games onto the Xbox, especially not PC staples like Warcraft. But something really disturbs me about how much power MS will have in the PC gaming business once they own Blizz and Sierra.

The irony is that I claim that I will "hate Microsoft forever" if they lay a finger on Blizzard. But what can I do about it? I use Windows XP, am too lazy to use Linux, and hate Mac OS almost as much as Windoze. I love Xbox (Live), am lukewarm about PS2, and find absolutely zero appeal in GC/GBA. Something scares me about the fact that, if M$ buys Blizz and Sierra, my entire life and death will be controlled by the whim of Microsoft.

Come to think about it, thats even scarier when I write it down that way. Eek!
