Metal Gear Solid 3: E3 2K4 Video

From the E3 impressions I read it seems that the jungle guides you in the right direction along a linear path.

Here's hoping that it isn't as linear as the Jungle in Pandora Tomorrow!

I think the game that perfected (or introduced?) the repeating-rooms thing was Zak McKracken when you flew to Kairo(?). But that's a bit OT now ;)

Nah, there was one game on the C64 in the mid-80s that purportedly had like a MILLION locations, and there was rather a lot of hype about the game, and of course when the game came out people discovered the locations all looked pretty much the same, and that the game sucked royally.

What else was there to expect, hehe?

Ah, sounds like one of Paul Woakes' games! Probably Mercenary if it was on the C64. Those games actually put me in a very eerie, and rather likable, mood.

I loved the way your imagination had to work to fill in the blanks during those primitive days. It was, in some ways, closer to reading a book than the more movie-like experience we're served today. Some games still manage to capture that feeling. Katamari Damacy springs to mind (however, that's probably because the human models you encounter in that game actually bear an uncanny similarity to those found in Mercenary III!)

The jungle itself, it's segmented into rooms. (removing the seamless free roaming aspect) You cannot climb any tree, only specific ones nor can you just go "anywhere" within the jungle. You are guided, but when infiltrating an enemy stronghold, attacking or evading a patrol, etc. there are multiple methods of doing so at your disposal. (Kojima alluded to this) Animals are simply there for Big Boss's nourishment, & seem rather non-interactive at this point. But in all fairness the playable demo was not comprehensive, more like a training stage that showed off the various aspects of the game. That said, KCEJ-W have created a beautiful & engrossing game. The attention to detail is truly astounding. It's hard to compare to SC:pT's in terms of linearity, as it seems that MGS3 masks this aspect much better. From what I observed off of the trailer, it gives the player the feeling that it is less linear than it actually is.

I've heard from another E3-goer, that even in the short demo, you have several ways on your disposal to infiltrate some small base at the end of the demo :)

Did anyone notice difference between E3-2003 and 2004 video? In 2k3 video Snake looks too cheesey, clean-shaved. 2k4 's Snake looks much more *Solid*. :D

BTW, from 2k4 video it looks like Colonel is a renegade Spetnaz big-wig and he wants to get his hands on Metal Gear. Good that Snake now has two girls to take care of. The 2nd girl (with nice cleavage) seems to be a soldier herself, she also attacks Snake, where she (with bike) is shooting on snake, but begins to like Snake (no surprises). 1st girl might be that *spec* scientist's daughter *spec*.... :)
