I find it very funny that they moved away from XCOM style abilities+cooldown+to-hit because of randomness, because this game is far more random than XCOM ... most people just aren't going to set it to a difficulty level where it matters.
First of all there's an entire mechanic of throwing enemies down a hole which has a random chance, second of all, but more importantly of all the card games I have played recently this one by far has the greatest variance. You'll draw through your deck somewhere near the end of the fight, there's no intrinsic abilities to put on cards to get them in your opening hand, the only thing you can do to bring down variance is get more card discard/draw, but that has pretty limited availability too. It's super random, the characterization is a level of infantile you won't find outside of bad porn (in bad porn they can't order a pizza without it being delivered by someone hot and down to fuck, in Midnight Suns you can't invite a super hero to the abbey without them being interested in platonic dates by the moonlight and becoming BFF). Still had fun with it.
I wish they had made a tactical game with larger XCOM-2 style maps for combat, I don't mind the card game aspect but the tiny set piece battles are bad for immersion. The social aspect should have felt more organic, not every storyline with a hero has to lead down the same BFF path. This is a lot of effort spent on a mediocre game they could have spent making XCOM-3.
