Linux version of MS Silverlight to be called Moonlight

What does Microsoft have to gain from doing this?
Is this just to get good PR?
No. Silverlight is/will be Microsoft's plattform for rich internet applications and a direct competitor to Adobe's Flash/Flex. Supporting Linux increases their plattform-independece since Windows/Mac/Linux should account for about 99% of all desktops out there. The broader their reach the better for them and the better their chances to cut into Flash's marketshare.

The video codecs however will stay propiertary, and will be available for download from Microsoft later on.

This is probably the place where the real money is in the whole thing.

I will support whatever is the most available to everyone. I currently hate the fact that Flash 9 isn't in the PS3's browser, for instance (only 8 atm) - and ditto for Linux. It's it's only downside really, otherwise it's great (ok, text editing inside the box when using a keyboard would also be nice, but that's supposed to be coming)

I just hate flash period, because it's slow and buggy. I hope it dies a horrible death. :p

Not seen any silverlight stuff at all yet. How can MS take over the universe if nobody's using their tech? hehe..
Peace.

Yeah flash definetly sucks performance-wise. Besides I haven't seen anything really cool that has been done with it. It'll be nice to see if anything better comes out of this.
