The thing which makes mr. Kutaragi special is his position ... in vision he isnt exactly blazing any trails, and Id maintain that the true genius is that which solves the problems needed to get there. Not someone who skips those essential steps and dreams away.
BTW I kinda doubt they are using GNU HURD, my guess hurd == cluster.

I think GNU HURD would be a great step for IBM, SCE and Toshiba researchers as the basic kernel for the CELL OS.
Code designed for SMP wont port very well to more massively parallel architectures (well except for MTA). IBM has its own distributed OS, K42, although I personally think this kind of stuff is a little heavyweight for PS3 (I expect Linux on the PPCs and the PEs either handling everything in hardware or with very simple microkernels).
