Is it just me or is Wii hype dying off?

I have come to notice something lately..perusing beyond3d and others..the PS3 hype seems to be growing organically, while the Wii hype lessens. Check how many threads are about PS3 vs Wii here on the front page.

Just an observation I had to get out. Do you agree? What does it mean? Etc. Is it because there has been little Wii info lately? Does it have no relevance to the public's buying tendencies (aka they buy Wii in droves anyway)?

Or is the Wii's lack of graphics lessening it's impact even now?

Ehh, hope this isn't deemed too inflammatory, but oh well.

Well atm, there is a new PS3 thread every two minutes on this forum. Say hi to guerillia marketing, I suppose. However I'll bet in general wii will just hold its own better then most people here expect, especially when they just launch with a new zelda and mario come november. So... without deviating too much off topic, I'd say you are right: comparativly, these days, wii (and 360) hype does not pick up as "organically" as PS3 hype.

There was a lot of excessive negativity swirling around PS3 after E3 and a good deal of time afterwards, due to the high price that was announced there. Wii naturally expanded to fill the vacuum created, being the only other unreleased platform so far in the current/coming generation; that's not very strange.

It's also not strange that the scales start to righten themselves as PS3 launch edges closer, PS3 is the big guns platform after all, and will naturally take up a large amount of room in a forum such as this. I don't think that means people have become less interested in Wii though, I don't believe the level of activity in threads on a web forum accurately reflects peoples' buying intentions. ;)

There's been a fair few newbie threads about stuff already covered. Other than that there's nothing new to talk about. GC failed to show anything worth mentioning on the whole. For PS3 we've had a trailer and a few interviews and other remarks. They've just got some info coming out where Nintendo is quiet.

Yeah I agree with you Rangers. Tommy Tallarico (lol) was talking about this in a recent podcast ( http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/unrestricted/~3/17270685/unrestricted038a.mp3 ) with his theory about the E3 having affects on the acceptance of PS3 and Wii. (starting at 32 minutes)

For example he mentioned the things nintendo did to almost create easy hype for themselves. The press conference with all the Nintendo execs and with red steel and wii tennis seemed to create a higher response than the dredded sony conference. It basically blew people away compared to the other two conferences. They had their booth setup so you had to wait in line in front of every other booth making it look like it was such a bigger thing when you could just walk into the sony or MS booth no problem, but had to wait hours for nintendo.

But he says that on the showroom floor, he was actually dissapointed with the hands on with the Wii but was more impressed ps3 and 360 games. But still the general consciencus was that the Wii was still a greater thing because of their e3 conference. The way the companies present their machines has a larger affect on the media, than the actual reality of things or hands on response. He wasnt impressed as much as the media made it out to be, and we are now seeing the results of that months later.

Its a good listen, If you wanna just skip through the stuff and get to the Wii/PS3 stuff, just FF to like 30-31 minutes into the show.

I would think most people have already made up their choice about the Wii, while the PS3 still have to convince people to spend that much money for it...

Internet forums have little to do with actual trends or the vast majority of people who purchase video game consoles. Trying to infer anything about the bigger picture from them is a pointless excercise.

The (non-gaming focussed) news (TV and print) coverage of the Games Convention in Leipzig for example was mostly concentrating on Wii and PS3 (although neither were playable to "normal" people, and Wii seemed to be portrayed most positively overall), with hardly a word lost on Microsoft and the 360.
The perception from gaming sites is definitely not congruent with the general public, so any such conclusions are only applicable to a small subset of media.

Yes I think it really has died down. The Wii was all about the fancy controller. Once that got old, there's nothing left to talk about. You can almost give it as a premonition of what many expect the Wii sales will be: good at first, crap after a few years when everyone loses interest.

The main selling point is the wiimote and its application ... and unlike impressive specs, screenshots or flashy teaser movies the experience doesn't translate well via the internet. I'm sure the Wii hype will kick in as soon as the whole thing gets more accessable to the public. The interest is still there ... now it's Nintendos' turn to deliver

I don't think PS3 hype has really even started.

TGS might change that.

No, I the “hypeâ€￾ is well on its way. This is evident due to the fact that just about all discussion on PS3 has moved away from what components (CPU / GPU) the system is made up of. As for BlueRay, looking at players the other day I would have to admit I was expecting to much from the technology. The picture was clear, but nowhere near the leap in picture clarity that is being promoted.

Well starting from this years E3, Wii git lots of attention since it was the first chance to see it in action and try something different. It was bound to get lots of coverage.

PS3 kind of killed itself during that time with the announcement of the price. After that it got nothing but negativity from the media. Otherwise things would have been different since as a whole package it stands out.

After the excitement for something new wore out people turned their heads to the PS3 since now they already know what's Wii about and there is nothing really new to learn for it.

PS3 still has the most famous game franchises for it plus some new interesting ones so people are waiting to see how well they will be trasnlated to the next gen. Also the consumer is eager to learn about the online service, BR-movies and the overal interface

The main point is here that the PS3 was overhyped at E3 2005. It's a lot like a successful movie. The first one surprises you pleasantly, and then the second one carries the expectations of the first. Even if the second one equals the first, the first one exceeds your expectations, the second only meets them. Then if the second one actually has a few faults, they are quickly unforgiveable.

However, the PS3 has done itself a favor at this years E3 as a result. Because with lower expectations for TGS after E3, it is in a better position to wow the crowd again.

Of course, the PS3 also quite simply has a lot more stuff in it to show off than the Wii, which really does only have its controller and its games. That's not nothing - in fact, combined with the price it may very well have a great effect on the market - but the level of interest from the more hardcore console gamer (and other tech-heads) is definitely going to be higher for the PS3.

I'm amazed by this overall impression i get that people seem to accept that they know everything about Wii.

Take for instance the suggestion that that wii could be priced at $229. Then proceeding to read the camp that declares it overpriced. Over priced based on what knowledge?? Unless i missed a bit of news - or you privy to information which im sure others would love for you to share - ther is no way you are in a position to make such a claim, the information available is just too little.
Then theres the other id pay $600 for a wii, another absurd comment to make considering that they havent played the machine yet and by all indications Wii is merely an evelutionary step at best it resets the cycle.

Its just find it confusing and frustrating, Its liek the blind leading the blind only theres a couple one eyed dudes that lack depth perception adding to the confusion as well

Anyway nintendo have just played their game too long, the air of mystery that helped them build their hype is now simply killing it - their online hype anyway - a lack of information combined with the perception that Wii wont be doing anything interesting technologically, has alllowed the PS3 to gain a little more focus.

Nothing new here. Nintendo is known for being secretive untill lauch day. We have also seen them deliver more than they promise. The gamecube for example was a excelent piece of hardware and it was better than the ps2, however nintendo did not say stuff like toy story graphics like sony did.

I spect sony to BS with PR this comming months. If history repeats itself then nintendo will sell less than sony yet again for the 3rd consecutive time. Lets wait and see.

However I see no indication at all that nintendo wont deliver again excelent and cost effective hardware like they did with all their platforms since the nes to the GC. I spect the hardware to be better than spected.

No offence or anything, but I believe this statement was started by MS.
"One of the basic premises of the Xbox is to put the power in the hands of the artist," Blackley said, which is why Xbox developers "are achieving a level of visual detail you really get in 'Toy Story.'" http://netscape.com.com/Microsoft+got+game+Xbox+unveiled/2100-1040_3-250632.html

That said, you're right on the point, nintendo does an excellent job providing quality in their products. They really set the bar for the other two competitors over the years. I just I was more enthusiastic about their actual games.

Yeah I got that wrong. However you agree sony pulled some pr claims that were just stupid but the average joe believed it. It really helped when killing the dreamcast wich had IMO better hardware than ps2.
