Marvel Entertainment, which has partnered with Paramount for Iron Man, has not only announced Favreau as the director, but has gone as far as announcing the release date of May 2008, despite not having finalized financing and backing for the film.

Like Batman, Iron Man is a superhero by choice. His (Primary) alter ego has been Anthony (Tony) Stark, however others have worn the powered suit for short periods since the character was introduced in the early 60's. Unlike Batman, who's appearance and abilities have remained reasonably consistent, Iron Man (Stark) has perpetually modified his armor's appearance and upgraded it's abilities. As a result, what started as a clunky gray suit that looked as though it were made from an old russian tractor has evolved into a funky red and gold number more comparable to an Italian sports car.
I actually jumped from my chair when i read that. :) OMG, iron man rulez!!!

Ol Tommy-Boy would be a good fit for Tony Stark I think, if he'd be able to grow a moustache!

Then again, they can do most anything with prostethics these days, so maybe that problem can be fixed regardless, heh.

I'd love an Iron Man movie, haven't read too much stuff about him, but it's a cool character.

Iron Man is one of my favourite characters. Multi-billionaire industrialist (failed several times), womaniser, gadget freak, alcoholic, Avenger, cool new armour all the time.

I just read in today's paper people were pushing for Matt Damon to play a young version of Captain Kirk in the next Star Trek movie - which sounds like a pretty splendid idea to me - so why not Tom Cruise as Tony Stark... Ol Tommy-boy is even starting to approach that midlife crisis age when rich men start to get themselves new young girlfriends, fast sportscars and flying armored power exoskeletons with built-in particle beams and rocket launchers.

I liked Iron Man, I remember how much it impressed me when they made Tony Stark have a drinking problem way before dealing with addictions realistically was fashionable.

If anyone wants to read up on the history, there is of course a Wiki page. I hope they use some of the more modern and menacing armour. There was some talk that they would show almost all the armour, from the clunky original right up to the intergrated design, but I don't see how they could really make that work in a film except as a wavey lines and time goes by flashback of all armour type of thing. Especially as Stark has had literally dozens of different specialised armour designs, let alone all the changes in his generic armour over the years.

I could see how they could do it. Do an bit about how Stark became Iron Man, some montages of him doing a lot of heroic stuff, go to him upgrading his armor a few times, more heroic stuff, then get into his bottle adventures for a bit and all the stuff that happens then. (I'm trying not to spoil it for the non-Marvel freaks out there, both of them ;) )

Montages could work great for showing long periods of time passing quickly as well as work in the all important action scenes. :)

I just pray they never, EVER even consider the idea of making "The Secret Wars" into a movie...

They definitely shouldn't even attempt to have all of the various armors in there, except perhaps as a passing reference (like, say, a wall of newspaper clippings). It might make sense to have 2-3 models (showing the start of the superhero, and the main plot, sometime during which his suit is destroyed or somesuch).

Didn't actually know Stark had a drinking problem in the 'classic' version of him; the most contact with Iron Man I've had I think is from the Ultimates comic (which I think is bloody brilliant by the way), I thought Stark's drinking there was something the scriptwriter added to bring more depth to the character, sort of like Banner's inferiority complex and Pym's narcissist tendencies... Oh, and Thor's possible insanity.

Interesting, and quite brave for a comic book. When did this happen btw?

or maybe they could have him walking past a room lined with glass cases with all the armors, maybe have each case with an lcd monitor with video footage of it being used. would be kinda cool.

That's what I was thinking (except for the LCD monitor). I believe the comic has protrayed such a museum type of collection before.

If Dirty Harry had a gallery of all the guns he's owned, I bet he wouldn't have an LCD monitor next to each, showing how he's killing people with them.

I bet he also wouldn't have a cameraman following him around as he says, "Are you getting this?" as he plugs a guy.

Good Lord! Yes, it's another one of my thread resurrections!

Looks like the new Iron Man actor has been chosen, and it's Robert Downey Jr. He could be good if he plays it straight and doesn't have a drink/drugs meltdown, as obviously he'll be able to do Stark's alcoholic dark side from his own experience.

More details here and here.

Holy thread resurrection, batman! :D

No, he'll have a swarm of cameramen following him around as he speaks out on the dangers of crime only to then lose interest and say, "now watch this drive."

I do not disapprove... He could be a good Tony Stark. Maybe even very good. A 20 year older Josh Hartnett might maybe have been even better, but I don't wanna wait that long to see if I'm right, haha.

Sounds like a good match. :)

So who plays the Mandarin? ;) The guy who did Shang Tsung?
