internet problem

Legend
OK in the current house Ive been able to surf the net OK for the last year or so, but something has just happened.
I was just on the telephone with someone from the telephone comapny and aint 100% sure what the problem is and what I need to rectify it

telephone = landline, internet = broadband ethernet (plugged into wall at different soket than the telephone)

A. If I ring and talk to someone I can surf the internet, when I hang up (the internet stops) i.e. its like the phone is acting as a booster signal
B. I can surf the internet, if the phone is unplugged from the wall

from what I can gather, the box on the wall where the jack plugs into (splitter?) is not 100%, burnt out (measuring 5x5x2 cm)
Anyone got any advice about what the problem is exactly?

cheers zed

If you're using ADSL (internet comes over the same phone line) you normally need a filter to stop voice calls and data interfering. Sounds like you're either not using one or yours is bad...

cheers mate, thats it
when I said (splitter?) I meant filter (I'ld forgotten the word) funny both sockets in this house, which have them must of died about the same time. It was a bit hard understanding the guy on the callcenter helpline phone (not being a native english speaker and all that) now I understand what the issue is, so can fix it

@Davros sorry for the confusion

cheers guys

Normally you should also always plug your DSL modem into the first phone jack coming into your house, or performance can take a serious hit. Maybe you're already doing this; just thought I should point it out...

Better still find the master socket, if it's BT, and remove the lower plate. Behind that you'll find the test socket. Plug your filter into that and you're guaranteed the best connection you can get on your line.
