Interesting article about the XBOX2 CPU at Inq

Without a doubt the Xbox 2 will be the world's first consumer supercomputer ever. Everything about it reeks of supercomputer....Multiple Power4/G5 RISC CPU's processing in parallel and employing vector math processing. Those CPU's designed by supercomputer manufacturer IBM. Graphics processor employing dynamic logic and vector math processing from the world of supercomputers, manufactured by ATI which is now primarily run by ex-SGI engineers, again a manufacturer of supercomputers. Can't wait until someone hacks into it and installs 64 bit Linux. Can you imagine a Beowulf Cluster built of multiple Xbox 2s ?!!!

I know the Inq is less than reputable, but I thought this was worthy of discussion.

Same thing was said about PS2 in pre-launch hype. Anyone remember the "PS2 cluster"?? With subsequent hilarious pictures of 8 or more PS2 kept together one on top of each other with tape....

You never know, things might change, maybe we'll see Chap and DM change factions and become MS bashers...

That not the same dearie. This be Inq doing the bleh blah bleh saying, Inq = known to be not too nicey with MS stuffs. Back then it was SONY themselves doing the supercpu bit!

Looks more like a jab at XB2 IMO? :D
That's funny, I didn't get that from the article at all. I took away that MS is implementing a well thought-out design of parts which complement each other, as opposed to the 'brute force' design choice of the first XBox. Parts which complement each other, yet are amazingly powerful. Mmmm... :)

Seems like a lot of wishful thinking and hopeful speculation all mixed together to produce a big empty pile of blah. Just for starters, ATi never said what they'd use this fast14 logic for that the email writer assumes will go into the xbox2 GPU.

While I admit speculation is fun, isn't there supposed to be some revelation of the *actual* specs at the upcoming GDC?

yup, it's likely to be an pre-emptive strike of sorts to force Sony to layout their gameplan a little more throughly.

no hardware probably only emulation and lots of paper specs (and don;t we just love those.. :) ). still if it launches in 2005 with a good library I am sold.

Might be, but to be honest this sounds like Sony-talk 1999 all over again... Kinda yawny if you know what i mean...

Why can't they just do their own thing, then reveal the hardware when they know something more about it.

This way they're only creating loads of chaps all over the world.

Think Matrix Revolutions, but instead of Agent Smith it's Chap.
Just kidding!

I'm already looking forward to the next unrealistically offline-rendered Raven + Robot demo... ;) (Kinky, that woman...)

Unfortunately, videogame companies LOVE people like Chap, there's nothing better in their eyes than an army of unpaid fanatical evangelists doing free advertising for their products and spread the gospel of 'tEh sHInEy shINe'...

that's also what I got out of that article.

in a nutshell its saying Xbox 2 will be based on supercomputer technology from IBM and Silicon Graphics Inc.

Except they actually did make different type of PS2 cluster
