... because MS owned Sony and created more innovative hardware!
Despite all of Sony's CGI demos and marketing hyperbole, X360 is at least slightly more powerful than the PS3 due to intelligent engineering and integrated system design.
The cell GPU never materialized. Sony had to go to NVidia and throw a PC part into the PS3 to make it work and ended up with no eDRAM.
The multiple PE cell never materialized and they had to reduce the SPUs to 7 just to get it working right.
65nm never materialized either. Both consoles will be built with 90nm tech.
This is all just opinion on my part and we'll probably never know the whole story, but I think that Sony saw that MS was about to be in the market for an extra year and panicked and did what they could to make a decent system as quick as possible.
Don't get me wrong: PS3 is a powerful system that will have great looking and playing games, but MS seems to have really done their homework this time and put out a killer system that I don't think PS3 can quite live up to.
