Ideally I should make an image of the first partition but I don't have space for it (110GB)

If you use Norton Ghost, it will happily compress your data while making an image. Only the used space goes into the image, too.

Try FastFileRecovery, the demo will at least show you what could be saved, so you don't throw the money away unless you're sure it'll do it.

Struth! That's a memory hungry app. It chewed up all the virtual memory and my PC slowly keeled over!

I might try re-running it sometime later.
