GPU sharing system memory?

I've got a Nvidia GTX465 1GB card. Except that it's never registered at 1GB.. before yesterday's upgrade (I had 4GB DDR2 RAM), it was showing around 2.5GB of memory, and today (with 16GB DDR3) it's showing 4GB of Video RAM. That's on DXDiag, SystemRequirementsLab, even the system-check file for Blizzard's beta opt-in.

I'm guessing that the card is borrowing unused memory from the system. Is that what's happening? The full DXDiag seems to support this, it says 1GB dedicated memory and 3GB shared. I'm also guessing that this isn't the same thing as having 4GB of onboard video RAM.

Take the cooler off the GTX 465 and if it has 10 memory IC's instead of 8 then it's really a GTX 470.

You can then BIOS flash the card to a FULL GTX 470 for free ::)

Is that likely ?
Are there 460's shipping with 10 ic's

A very large percentage of reference cards released for the first few months are full fat GTX 470's with a crippled BIOS.

It literally is as easy as removing the cooler, If you have 10 memory IC's then it'll flash to a GTX 470 and be 110% fine, If it has 8 memory IC's then it's a true GTX 465 core.

the memory thing looks like what we used to call AGP texturing, it's what allows you to get low framerates rather than single-digit framerate when memory usage exceeds physical memory.
