I want to see some ingame play first before I judge

this is a standard in-game view for GR

This looks very much like a level/map from the first Ghost Recon (PC). It also looks very nice with the "updated" graphics. I wonder how many people will freak out once they find out that you cannot jump in this game. heh (Or can you? I hope they didn't change that unless they put some serious thought into how to implement it.)

You can shimmy over small walls. One of the early videos showed a soldier scaling over a wall in Mexico city. Also when you're near the surface of a wall you'll automatically brace yourself up against it to reduce your profile.

The updated technology just isn't graphics, the sound engine should be very cutting edge.

The sound will raise new standards for positional gaming. Robbie demonstrated weapons fire on a map and the terrain dampening was incredible. The area effects such as firing in the open and then in a low area or even a drain pipe and was an environmental achievement of the highest regard.

Attention to detail with gunfire sounds like that should be a big step forward.

You know i don't see someone with that much equipment on them (i understand its like 15-30lbs of gear in real life for a ranger and other types of solider) jumping around all day shooting others .

That isn't much gear if you are counting, rifle 7-8lbs, helmet 4lbs, vest 8lbs+.

Finally, something that is starting to look a bit more than XBOX1.5ish.
I was thinking the same thing. The graphics here are definately a major step up from any other game out there, and in another league than COD2. The lighting is fantastic.

I can't wait to see some TV commercials for this game.

You misunderstood him. He's saying he doesn't see people jumping around all day with that kind of equipment.

You think soldiers work on 8 hour shifts?

They pack that kind of gear and wear it through whatever they come up against.

No, you don't get it. jvd was posting in response to someone's complaints of the game's lack of jumping. Do you think that guy can jump worth a damn with all that weight? Vince Carter would be lucky to get 20 inches of the ground if he had 30lbs on him, let alone the ridiculous heights that you see characters jump in CS. I'm thinking 6 inches max for a typical soldier when equipped.

I'm not sure what typical soldiers have to do with the Ghost Recon team. The cream of the Western world's armies are slightly different than a random sampling of US Army recruits.

"Self shadowing is not evident nor is the DOF any good. I think it needs 16XMSAA and 8XAF to be considered realistic. Not to mention the skin shaders arent the best I've seen.... Maybe next-next gen"

Your forgetting the gear on the belts and in their pants .

Its my understanding that they have almost 30lbs on them . I believe the batterys they carry for thier gear are very heavy .

Anyway with 20-30lbs (your numbers and what i believe is right) i would love to see someone jump around while shooting in a desert for 20 minutes or so .

It just doesn't make sense . Not only does jumping decrease your accuracy but it can make u an easy target .

Sure i see the ocasional jump if need be . But i don't see jumping like i see in most fps

That sounds good and logical. Personally, I don't think a free jumping function belongs in a game like Ghost Recon (yet), but the reasons for this are outside the scope of this thread. This, then, is basically what Rusty said, a contextual "jump" or scaling feature. I'm all for it.

Guys, the no-jumping function is not supposed to be part of the realism of the game. It is not like that because soldiers carrying gear are too weighed down to jump. It is a restriction to enhance gameplay (some argue in the other direction). It's a game and it needs certain rules to work. This is one of those rules.

The rich and famous engineers and important people that read beyond 3d need to tell Jim Kahle that the Arab man in that picture is wearing a less wrinkley shirt, than the blazer Jim has in the Buisnees 2.0 article and he is in a combat enviroment for crying out loud.

powderkeg - you're getting completely the wrong end of the stick.... jvd is saying the same thing as you

anyway, like i said, a small contextual jump would be a great addition (basically a more universal "climb over" command). i don't want to see soldiers bouncing around the battlefield because that would just absolutely spoil the realism. However, not being able to hop over a small log also spoils the realism and immersion for me (i know for a fact that i can hop over logs when fully laden with combat gear, including a full bergen which they don't carry in this game)... so i think what i suggested would be the best solution.
