Games: Future of entertainment?

Video gaming is fast becoming a mainstream entertainment activity.
Over the last six years the UK market for games has grown by 100% and was worth a record £1,152m in 2003, according to a report by analysts Screen Digest.

Spending on games has grown much faster than on other forms of entertainment like film or music.

The average PlayStation 2 player is in their twenties and more and more women are getting into games.

Is video gaming the future of entertainment? Are you a player? Send us your views on this trend. Will it last?

People in the UK are buying and playing more games than ever before, with video gaming fast becoming a mainstream entertainment activity.

Gaming is really becoming the mainstream entertainment :)

Games will definately become bigger and bigger. By the time games will look like movies like Spiderman2, what do u think people will buy? the version you can watch and is over in 2 hours, or the version you control and can play for at least 30 hours??? For about the same price too... Games have lots more value than movies in term of hours of enjoyment / price ratio.

I think the entertainment industry is cottoning on to how profitable the game industry can be compared to traditional industries. For instance, the article mentions that Dido's 'Life For Rent' album and GTA:Vice City both sold around a million copies in the UK. However, the grossed nearly £50M, compared to the former's £14M. I'd guess that Vice City was probably cheaper to produce, too (given the game engine was already there) and that top recording studios and producers charge a fortune.

wow

Interesting thing about the music industry, or at least it used to be, is that albums can sell like crazy. If an album goes platinum then that is always great news, but often times you have the big stars selling 3x and 4x platinum. I would believe that is a very high profit for record companies. It's a shame music sales are in a slump, are they still? Then there are always concerts!

What the gaming industry needs more of is annual shows and award events aired nationally on television. Then I can see it truly being mass market. If there was an Oscars type even for videogames that would be amazing. I think it could happen some day. E3 is already a big event, but there needs to be more like that. GDC helps a bit too, but it should remain focused on devs.

Games are no doubt coming into the mainstream nicely. With the Matrix games (blech) and a few others that will have movie tie-ins then we will probably see a whole lot more in the future. The biggest problem I foresee with regards to it beocming larger than other entertainment sectors/industries is the way we have to change gaming machines every few years or so. While that's not entirely a bad thing (I think it is good and spurs sales, plus it always brings new and better gaming experiences) the market might not want to change so often. There may also be a need for one format that many different manufacturers can get in on. While I like the closed nature of a console, it may prevent the industry from ever becoming truly mass market. Then again, it can be like PC's and Mac's. Both share the market for home computers but the latter has a niche.

With a game like MGS2 who needs to watch a movie or listen to music.

Jesus... it's good but not THAT good............. :D

But for me it is among the best games I ever played, story, gameplay, sound, graphics...everything was phenomenal.

Meh, people still play games?

I've gone from total hardcore gamer in 2000/2001 to at most a casual gamer, I can't remember the last time I finished a game, probably shenmue on the DC. That was because I had chickenpox at the time, and that was a while ago. I tell a lie, actually Max Payne 2.. that was crackin.

Music is where it as at for me right now, music and people.. and fashion. Does that make me shallow? lol.

Seriously, were farcry or doom 3 any good for anyone else? I just didn't feel compelled to play them at all after going "Oooooooooo". Someone suggest me a brilliant game I haven't played

MGS2=Metal Gear Solid 2.

Like you, sy, i've never finished Farcry, i'm very close but to be honest, i don't have much time in my hands, and it's not exactly magnetically attracting me to finish it either... I've bought Doom3 and for external reasons (big reasons) i have not been able to play it since saturday...

Just use a pillow l-b.

Since I bought my PC (at the beginning of this year) I've only found two games interesting enough that I've bothered playing through.
Call of Duty and UT2004.
Far Cry was too boring.
Splinter Cell PT was too boring
Star Wars KOTOR was too boring
Doom 3 already sounds so boring that I don't think I'm even gonna try it.
....
I've almost lost my interest to gaming, I'm hoping Burnout3, GTA:SA, MGS3 will bring it back.

i think next gen, and gens after that will see even more closer tie-ins between games and films.
Didn't Sony hire the Naughty Dog Jason Rubin just for that, to explore the possibilities with movie studios?

Same thing here, although i must say, Doom3 got me pretty hooked straight away, mainly because of the amazing presentation...

Was reading in the metro this morning about how we're anation of gamers... but I think its not much more than publicity for an industry which is running out of steam. The lack of real innovation is highlighted by the fact that the odd AAA title produced everynow and then sells by the bucket load.

In other news I just bought the coolest shirt and flat cap...

Yeah so I might pick up San Andreas and the new Pro evo, but its basically two HUGE expansion packs to games I already like.
