OK, given some of the converstations here I thought I'd just have a bit of a play and run some numbers on G70 at 500MHz (it wouldn't go to 550MHz) and 350MHz memory (half the speed that PS3 will be, but twice the width). Obviously this isn't a scientific test, but may give some thoughts.

Holy crap, guess 4X AA will be X360 exclusive....
Why is that? It looks pretty shader/cpu bound up to 720p.
there is no 720 p here

1280x720 is 720p vs
1024x768 or 1280x1024

1080p is 1920 x 1080 vs 1600x1200.

All in all the numbers are interesting . It does really well at 1024x768 you get 77.2 fps with hdr but at 1280x1024 that drops to 48.5 and then 32.7 at 1600x1200 . I don't see multisampling or supersampling at that kind of hit if it carries over to the rsx

We don't know how much use of the XDR pool they'll use for buffer instead of soley using GDDR3 side, or the effectiveness of the Cell-RSX bandwidth. Interesting but I'm sure they'll have some differences in the final figures.

Can someone explain to me, why the G70@500mhz performs less than G70@430mhz?

because the ram on the g7@430 is at 600 instead of 350 .

Dave underclocked the ram to meet the expectation of the bandwidth avalible to the rsx through its local ram

I think most interesting to note is that:

1080i/p is 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels
1600x1200 = 1,920,000 pixels

So the target of 1080p with have lower performance than the highest column in this table (1600x1200). And the knock on is a higher impact for AA, etc.

FYI 720p is somewhere in between 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

Thanks Dave!

I think comparing PC benchmarks with consoles are useless to begin with, plus, RSX will have access to XDR memory as well(I am not saying RSX will use all of the bandwidth of XDR but since most bandwidth will be consumed by graphics, then most of the XDR will be used by RSX most of the times) so potential bandwidth will be lot higher than G70@350mhz of memory.

i was going to ask the same thing, if the FSAA is bandwith limited, why do we waste away half of the available RSX bandwidth? can Dave provide us a third benchmark with the memory clocked at 600mhz? it will not be accurate ofcourse but i think it will be closer to the real performance of RSX.

This tops, easily, the "It returns: the magical dots" thread, for the title of most useless thread from Dave to date.

But I guess, this one is meant to be a joke thread.

BTW, Dave, now that you, obviously, have spare time, can you consider giving the forum more mods, and give Sonic banning powers?

What the benchmarks do bare out though, since the frame-rates only drop with AA, HDR, or other backbuffer intensive tasks, is that backbuffer bandwidth requirements outstrip what's available to the RSX via GDDR3. The only option available to potentially alleviate that, is to seperate z and color buffers between memory pools. It's unknown at this point if that is even possible, and if it is, how effective it might be. "Z and colour access patterns tend not to be particularly optimal for traditional DRAM controllers where they are frequent read/write penalties". It would be impossible to recreate the latency and contention for the RSX accessing XDR, and how it would interact with CELL's normal processing.

I have certain doubts that CELL is not bandwidth hungry. How much XDR bandwidth and memory the RSX takes up is going to change per game, but I do think CELL will need at least 1/3 - 1/2 of that bandwidth.

If the proposed benchmark is inaccurate, how will it be closer to the real performance? :?
