Several of the biggest Xbox franchises are already planned for Xbox 2, according to Microsoft Game Studios boss Shane Kim, who has confirmed that Fable, Halo and Project Gotham Racing are all en route to the next-gen console.

Yes, not really breaking news, but nice to see they have confirmed sequals to these franchises. With Conkers, Perfect Dark, and Forza they are slowly building some nice exclusives. No where near Nintendo/Sony, but still a good start.

Not to sound too pessimistic, but apart from Halo, those and most other "biggest franchises" on the Xbox are just that, Xbox's biggest franchises.
MS will need the biggest franchises on any platform, or games that can rival them, or else only xbox fans will buy xbox2 games.
Other than that, its all good, i'm sure the Xbox2 will have lots of great games.

Isn't PGR a Dreamcast franchise?
Aren't Perfect Dark and Conker N64 franchises?
;)

IMO only Halo could be called an xbox franchise.
Can a game be called a franchise if it has only onge game released (Fable), and a sequels just "planned" ?l

Well they're exclusive Xbox franchises now, so...

A more interesting announcement would (will?) be MS getting MGS, GTA, DQ, FF and other multi-million sellers as exclusive. Who cares about PGR and Fable, looking at the big picture? The xbox has one multi-million seller that is exclusive, all the other consoles have a lot more than that.

In the end, more franchises will become multiplatform in the next gen so i wouldn't worry about it too much.

Don't forget bio ware rpgs , they sell very very well. I would expect a kotor 3 in the first 2 years and a new jade empire if it does well , along with nwn3 .

No, I was just answering to l-b's post where he claimed xbox has just xbox's franchises, and that it'd need franchises from other platforms.

i don understand the nitpicking breaking down semantics over small piece of news that simply info pple that games some like will continue to live next gen...

So what.

GTA is a PC franchise. Metal Gear, FF, Zelda and Metroid are 8bit NES/famicom franchises. Mario is an arcade franchise. Mario Cart and Starfox are Snes franchises.

IMHO a franchise is any game that had great reviews and great sales, and the sequel is highly anticipated by customers. Gods of War would now be considered a franchise. Super MArio Bros and Resident Evil were considered franchises after their initial release because they knew a sequel was widely anticipated. I dont think PGR and Fable are in that same league of anticipation(halo is), but there is still a big market demand for those titles.

XBox 2 doesn't just need console exclusives, it needs full exclusives. Too many of XBox's 'exclusive' games apear on the PC. If you have a decent PC there is almost no reason to get an XBox AFAICS. MS need to change that with XBox 2.

What? And piss off all the PC fanboys who want the games exclusive to PC? But then they're still whining about bad ports and whatnot. Man... can't ever satisfy these people. ;)

MS need to get there priorities right though :) XBox 2 is there gaming priority not PC.

I am not sure I agree. PC sales do not necessarily take away from console sales.

On the PC, you are doing pretty good to make 100k sales. On the Xbox you are looking at 1M. On the PC you have $1,000 systems that are near obsolete every 2 years; the console is good 4-6 years. So the demographics are very different in size and makeup.

Xbox/X2 are in competition with the PS2/PS3, not necessarily the PC. If anything, Xbox cuts into the PC market... but in the long run I think it is more of a "sharing" experience. The PC hits and new genres come to the X2 (or are co-developed under XNA) or X2 games that would have never come to the PC get ported over--but not to the other console platforms.

So whatever HURTS MS in not having an "air tight exclusve" also HELPS since the PC is a different demographic and there is cross platform development and porting the other consoles do not necessarily see. I think the pluses are are vital here.

And last time I checked, Halo PC sales did not hurt Halo OR Halo 2 ;)

I'm not talking about game sales on the PC taking away from game sales on XBox or XBox 2. I'm talking about these XBox games being available for the PC taking away sales of XBox itself. I would own an XBox right now if not for PES4 also being on PC. There will be plenty of others who would also have bought an XBox had the game they wanted not also been available on PC. So it most definitely does effect XBox sales.

I was also interested in Fable and a few others, but I'll just play all of them on PC (I'm already playing some of them on PC).

NOTE: Yes PES4 is also on PS2 but its only online on XBox and PC.

That's total nonsense about "too many xbox exclusives appearing on the PC". Infact I doubt you'd even see 30% of them appear on the PC. Go on, go through the list of exclusive titles from microsoft and count how many ended up on the PC. That argument has been used by people that don't own an xbox for a very long time, and it's a tad tiresome .

The PC market has very little impact on the console market, specifically when a game comes out at a much later date on PC.

It might be 30% overall but it seems to be a lot of XBox's top exclusives:

Blue equals also on PC.

Halo
Halo 2
Star Wars: KOTOR
Star Wars: KOTOR 2
Project Gotham
Project Gotham 2
Ninja Gaiden
Doom 3
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Crimson Skies
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Chronicles of Riddick
Rallisport Challenge
Rallisport Challenge 2
Top Spin

15 of XBox's best exclusives and 9 of them are on PC as well, or will be soon. I mean some of those are PC to XBox rather then the other way around. But other then Doom 3 would it really have cost MS so much to get these games totally exclusive to XBox rather then just console exclusive?

I'm not arguing against XBox here. I'm just saying that I think it would help XBox 2 sell more if it has more totally exclusive games rather then just console exclusive. Especially from my experience because I have been ready to buy an XBox a few times before until the game I wanted was announced for the PC. I'm sure there must be more people in that situation. Although personally I'd like to be able to continue to get a lot of XBox 2's best games on my PC. Saves me having to buy another console..

Did Xbox not have more exclusives then that? Which is completly my point, and why I said list out ALL the xbox exclusives from microsoft. There's no point in looking at the exclusives from all the publishers on Xbox (as in the top 50), since I'm arguing that ONLY small percentage of the exclusives from microsoft ended up on the PC.

Once again, the argument of "i don't need an xbox if you can get the same games on your PC" is a bunch of crap. How abotu this, I don't need a gamecube if I can get resident evil on my PS2. Even if it's 6 months to a year later (like the PC versions of thes xbox exclusives you listed), can you see how that doesn't make sense?

I'm not arguing against XBox Quincy, so don't bother insinuating it.

How can you say that when you put games in blue on your list that have yet to appear on a PC (Halo 2???), and if they do you have no idea how long after the console version? Who cares if it appears on the PC 6 months to a year later (in almost all cases it's been a year or much longer with the ones you added).

Again, I ask you to list out ALL the exclusives from microsoft, and show us exactly how many have ended up on the PC. Also please don't add any games that haven't showed up on the PC yet, or haven't been annouced for the PC. If you have an argument, at least make sure it's fair and balenced man... That's not too much to ask.

btw, nice edit to your original post as I see you removed the part that would start the usual pissing match.

Qroach,

I think your missing the point Teasy is trying to make. Lets just say there are four gaming platforms A, B, C and D. In terms of features, games and performance they have their pluses. But for performance,

A>B>C>D

There are 'timed' exclusives and 'real' exclusives. People that already own a platform that eventually will get a 'timed' exclusive are prepared to wait sometimes than actually buy 'another' platform.
