Explain to me: Why should I buy Halo 3?

Can't be, the dude is always going in ALONE ;); worst case (aka normal) we deploy in 2 or 4 man teams...of course, maybe this is where the co-op idea came from :D

As an addendum, I got so hyped for this game, I bought the music and have started to read the books, and bought an audiobook. HYPED!

He would deploy with others if there were any other Spartan II's left. ;) He did so often in the novels. Larger teams were deployed for defensive operations, but for target objectives, he normally went with two or three other Spartans.

Spoilers below pertaining to the Fall of Reach novel.
In fact, his original posting to the Pillar of Autumn put him in command of ~32 Spartan IIs for a long range mission into Covenant territory to capture a Covenant ship and possibly one of the ruling class (now known as the Prophets). Things got SNAFU when the Covenant attacked planet Reach. He sent a majority of the remaining Spartans on-planet to defend the fusion reactors powering the super orbital MACs while he went on a side mission with two other Spartans (Linda and Joshua IIRC...) to ensure the destruction of an ONI Section III ship that was docked in one of the orbiting space stations.

Joshua got sent off into space - MIA - and Linda was severely wounded and put into cryo-stasis aboard the Pillar of Autumn. Reach was lost and presumed glassed just as the Pillar of Autumn made a pseudo-random jump into hyperspace to escape; Cortana secretly used stellar coordinates found previously on some Forerunner artifact.

In Halo: Combat Evolved, you can actually go past that section in the first level where you see through the glass windows and the Elites are there "searching for you". There's a screen on the work station there that shows a schematic of your Mjolnir suit. If you go into the room behind you, you'll find a somewhat identical room with another screen showing the same schematic for a Mjolnir V suit, but the blast shields have been lowered - Linda!? ;)

That's my point. It's nothing more than his own subjective opinion. So why is he stating it as if it's a fact?

If it was really so 'average' it wouldn't have managed dozens of AAA scores now would it?

You don't always have to say, "In my opinion," before stating your opinion. I think it's fairly obvious when someone says they thought a game was "great", "average" or a "POS," they're offering an opinion.

And I'm allowed to question why he would classify it as 'average' when both critically and commercially it is far from it.

I just find it funny that you were pointing to reviews, as if that has anything to do with how he felt when he played it. If he doesn't like the game, he doesn't like the game.

You know, make your case as to why you like it, so Dave can get an idea if he wants to play it, but there's no reason to refute someone else's opinion, which is completely valid. I'm sure everyone here has played at least one game that was a critical and commercial success, but didn't really enjoy it.

I think that you should play the first two and then go for three.
Everyone is saying that the trailer for H3 (E3), was underwhelming. But the music alone makes me want to have it. The game has epic written all over it!
I'm always in conflict with my self when it comes to Halo. I don't think it's the best game ever or even as good as the media make it out to be, but I always had tremendous fun when playing it. It has this epic feel to it and everything (graphics, sound, music) contribute to that end.
Anyway, to really appreciate (the anticipation for) Halo 3, I think you need to play the first 2.

It's funny you missed my point 3 times in a row. I was never commenting on how he felt when he played it, I was simply pointing out that Halo is not an 'average' FPS by any stretch of the imagination.

And it seems to be more of a troll than anything, since he hasn't bothered to respond, so I'm not sure why you're wasting time defending the comment.

" Explain to me: Why should I buy Halo 3? "

Well, the snarky answer is just "you own a 360, don't you?" ;)

My personal take is "don't bother with console FPSes until they hit the bargain bin, unless they offer kb/m support and don't gimp the controls for gamepad use," but I don't expect too many people to follow that in regards to Halo 3. Heh...

I also don't expect too many people will have their consoles hooked up to their monitor and so be right next to their PC either, but such is life. (Well, the Wii will be hooked up to my TV once I get one, but not any HD machines.)
