Mark Rein mentioned Epic expects 300-400 games will be created using Unreal Engine 3 this generation of conoles.

While Epic has licensed previous versions of the Unreal engine, it has always been a tangential player in the market. Roughly 60 games used Unreal 2, mostly on PC. (The engine simply wasn't a good fit for consoles.) Mark Rein, vice president of Epic, expects 300-400 games to use Unreal 3 by the time we begin to see the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever Microsoft and Sony decide to call the machines).

The article also points out EA has scrapped the Criterion engine that was going to be used for Medal of Honor: Airborne. The game is now using UE3 as well a another game titled "Dead Space".

Well, the UE3 is in a constant state of improvement, so if the Crytek engines offers some technical ability that a company needs, I'm sure UE3 would eventually updated to have similar technology.

For example, I believe I read somewhere that the UE3 engine is getting something similar to the "Megatexture" technology that Quake Wars: Enemy Territory has.

Have they ironed out that pesky tiling/AA issue yet on 360? Until they do I'll look forward to other engines being utilized which don't have this limitation. Aside from this caveat they have superb tech but to me this oversight is not excusable for a next gen engine.

IIRC the licess of UE3 is about ~1M$, so they will have a lot of proffit this gen, even without making games.

I wonder how many of the licenses are being used for XBLA or if MS licensed UE3.0 in the first place so that would-be developers may be given access to the tools with some sort of separate deal on profit split instead of having each of these small time devs shell out $1M.

That has more to do with a heavy performance penalty using MSAA with deferred shading and lighting in general IIRC.

I think it's a bit too early to announce victory. Knowing the AA related problems with UE3, and other possible issues, more contenders may be able to come up with good alternatives.

We know, for example, that Carmack develops his new engine for nextgen consoles from the ground up. I'm also sure that the MegaTexture stuff will have no competitors for at least a year, so id will be able to offer a few unique features and good performance.

Then again, if UE3 really gets most of the deals because of the toolset, then it will be very hard to compete with them.
