Do you think these are PS2.0 effect?
I doubt its only DX7 level.

I must say I don't remember FarCry looking like that on my 9800 Pro :)

Anyway, imo the"SM 3.0" pics of FC are bit misleading, isn't Displacement Mapping "separate part" of DX9, not part of SM 3.0? And imo most of the difference between "SM 3.0" shots & "normal FarCry" comes from displacement mapping.

It's very likely that you'll need vertex texture to do displacement mapping in D3D9. Since vertex texture is supported only on shader model 3.0, it is correct to mention it, IMHO.

Probably not. If nV released these pics themselves, I'm hoping PCPer's misleading statements (who thinks PS3.0 "doesn't make a difference?") were uninformed rather than misinformed.

I think this has to do with the idea of render targets rather than ps 3.0

nv3x models I believe fall back on the the direct x 8 render target so the developer needs to insure that a geforce 3 or above can render at that target with acceptable framerates

9800s use a direct x 9 render target

and geforce 6800 will use a direct x 9c render target

more than just the types of effects available you need to consider the cards that will be using each target. The direct x 9c target probably will not use any effects that the direct x 9 target can't but it will assume that the user has more powerful hardware and maybe add more effects as a result.

I think this is a good way of doing things the direct x 9 target can be optimized almost exclusively for ati cards and the 9c for next gen nvidia cards. It's possable that the r420 could further complicate things.

I do find the wording of the article and use of the pictures very misleading. It shows a very bad image and implies it represents ps 2.0 which is completely false. It may represent nv3x vrs nv4x though. I don’t think that supposed ps 3.0 shot shows anything a 9800 pro can’t handle at decent framerates.
