I've tried it. There are two things that are currently not so great about it:
1) It doesn't work with every game (though a given, it's still something to consider).
2) The D-pad is mapped in such a way that many games cannot assign things to the individual directions. That is, if you assign 'up' on the D-pad to be health packs, the 'down' on the D-pad becomes unusable unless there is an opposite function to the one you assigned to 'up'.
Aside from that, there's really nothing lacking that I found.

Yes its per game, as the pad becomes more established, more games will cater to it and support will become much, much better until eventually its on a par with the X360 itself.
Thats the plan anyway.
Also, MS plans to support the wireless version and the dashboard button.
