directx problem

Don't know if this is the proper place to post this but will throw it out there and see if anyone can help. I am running win98se and had a problem where I had to reinstall windows. After reinstalling windows I can not run most games I get error messages about wrong versions of d3d9 and missing or corrupt files and missing export files. I think there is a conflict between directx versions and the files installed. I have tried to install direct9 and also 8 but nothing seems to work. Anyone have any ideas?

Version 4.09.00.0904

Version 4.09.00.0904 but if I look at the directx files most versions say 4.06.03.0518 and the date on all the files are 1999

Yeah you seriously need to update DirectX. All the files I have are version 5.xx etc

If you run dxdiag.exe it should list all the files and data. D3d9.dll should be dated sometime in 2006 at a minimum. I'm guessing you got one of the very first versions of DX9 installed if even 9 at all.

Just run winupdate or go to the microsoft site and search for directx and you should find some downloads for the newest version.

5.x files are the versions you get for DirectX in Win2K based operating systems
4.x are for Win9x operating systems

Google for DXCleaner, use it to fully uninstall directx and then install the current version from the MS site. There should be a downloadable there if you're not using windows update (like noone sane should).
