While the word on the release status of the long-delayed Aurora, Sega Sammy's pachinko/pachislot/arcade board driven by the SH3707 SoC designed for portables, maintained that the system was still being held up by Japanese gaming (gambling, not video gaming) regulations, the board now reportedly did launch way back last year with the release of the game, Dinosaur King.

(Sega Sammy did have a legal dispute with Taito, taking the company to court for making a game almost exactly like Dinosaur King's predecessor, Mushi (Beetle) King, but with dinos. Taito was eventually forced to withdraw their game, but this issue perhaps was the cause of some of Aurora's delay?)

Dinosaur King is a kids' game and the follow-on to the Mushiking phenomenon in Japan. It was presented at JAMMA 2005.

Pachislot machines using Aurora had been delayed because new Japanese regulations were being instituted which required the devices to focus less on their gambling function and more on their entertainment aspect.

The new industry format, being used in Sega Sammy devices powered by Aurora, is now ready to be introduced and will replace almost all of the old format machines within the next year or two. For Sega Sammy's business, that amounts to almost one and a half million devices.

The system's SH3707 SoC runs a custom version of a glass vase graphics demo with 4xAA, originally made by the graphics core provider to show off the potential of the IP, at a high framerate.

lazy, could you, please, provide more links on this if you have any - sources, possibly more/higher-res image - i'm really interested. thanks.

Very little attention is ever given to reporting on pachinko/pachislot graphics technology, so most of what's known is derived in bits from business operation reports from the companies involved.

A glimpse of the Aurora vase demo in motion is shown by Sega Sammy R&D in their constant recruitment effort for more employees (the demo looks to have used a higher resolution instead of the 4xAA to take advantage of the output of the LCD.)

Aurora was briefly highlighted in some graphics conferences presentations.

The system's SH3707 received some media coverage two years ago as Renesas wrapped up development and presented the SoC.

Some of the specifics of the Sammy contract for the development of the SoC was announced by Imgtec in 2002.
