Did the MTV special backfire on MS?

I didnt get to see the special (I was at the Miami Heat- Washington Wizards playoff game :p )

But the buzz I have gotten from real, non-technical people was that it was a lukewarm and/or slightly corny showing.... better that they deliver a documentary special with a serious tone I guess.I had to send a couple folks vids of PGR3, and 2k6 for them to get excited about the next generation and they said they must've missed these.

What y'all think?

from the non-technical people I know they didn't like the show but they like the x360 and were asking me were can they fing more info about the games and such, but they always get like that when new systems are coming soon

was it corny? yep, well that's MTV. Was it nearly as bad as people on message boards were complaining about? No. It hardly showed any real game footage and was only a simple teaser.

All the complaining and crying on the net, over a 30 minute show that barely showed any actual game footage (I think it showed about 1:34 second of game footage) while it was meant to be a teaser, is extremly typical. PD0 didn't look great, but at the same time you don't get to see it for very long.

Anyway I'm sure the same complaining people will either...

a) complain more
b) shut up

...after E3.

the thing e3 means nothing to anyone not really into technology.

most people get their game info from

friends;
game stores;
EGM (lol)

"Whats e3?"

I would like to remind that the European show showed 1:34 less than the US show, and it basically sucked ass beyond imagination. It was total waste of time and money for MS and total waste of time for viewers, except for the The Killers and the other bands fans.

It was a teaser, it shows what the console looked like, shows some quick clips of games and nothing more. What the heck do you expect a teaser to do exactly? give you all the tech specs and show you every game indepth?

It didn't matter if it was MTV or some monkeys showing the xbox 360 in a jungle on Discovery channel. What it did was it allowed Microsoft to start their hype-machine before Sony's... mission accomplished.

Bingo, anyway how come MTA isn't getting you any new work?

like I said I didnt see the special... but I would think that MS would want positive hype... instead of playing into the hands of their competitors by getting people to say "I heard that PS3 will more powerful, and the x360 looked weak, I'll wait for PS3."

PGR and 2k6 vids came to the rescue though 8)

The question is, though: did it generate the kind of hype that Microsoft wanted it to? Perhaps even was this successful enough that future competitors might want to copy this business model?

I guess it depends on WHAT you were looking for.

Did they reveal the Xbox 360 console? Yes.

In that way it was a success. People now know that MS has a new console (which looks very nice IMO). They also talked about their online plans and some of the finer details like a HDD, Windows connectivity, wireless controllers, etc...

I did think the show was too technical for MTV.

Did it bomb in showing games? Yeah... but games seemed to be the last thing on their minds. The show was an Xbox 360 inveiling, not a game inveiling.

Now I would tend to agree that games = the ultimate point, but I can remember back to the PS2 launch. People would have been more than happy to stair and talk about the PS2 for 30min, just because it was the PS2. I know friends who feel the SAME way about the Xbox 360.

I just guess it depends what their goal was. I thought the goal was to reveal the console, I was not expecting much from games.

Personally, I would have spent 10 minutes with the console (mainly FEATURES that people will see, screw the technical stuff) and then 20min on games, specifically PGR3, GOW, GR3, NBA 2K6, Madden, Condemned, Kameo, NFS and just let the games speak.

But I am a gamer... they know I will be watching E3.

I don't think it's so much of a question of what did you expect from it, but more what did Microsoft achieve with it? People, fans - you can turn this all you want, the point is, the people this "teaser", or whatever you call it, was targeting did not like it, obviously expecting more while being underwhelmed.

That's enough to call it a failure.

since your the type of person to be posting on beyond3d I doubt you or anyone else that uses the internet realy was the true target of the show, the people online were looking for some e3 type event. I know people that have internet just for there xbox and ps2 and don't own a computer, the type of people that get all there gaming info from gamestop or eb and curse you when you tell them it's wrong, thats who the show was for and they were happy to see it

So I wasn't targeted at all? Last time I heard, I thought Microsoft was hoping to expand its own market beyond the hardcore and fans that bought their console this generation. Ultimately, it's my, yours and everyone elses money that Microsoft wants us to shell out and get an Xbox360. It's up to them to convince us to buy there product. They're the underdog, the ones ultimately that are wanting to grab market share of Sony's userbase.

BTW; People that work at gamestop etc likely browse around the net too and from what I gathered, there's a very small minority that was impressed by the big revelation. If those gamestop people weren't impressed and are having doubts - what will they tell those customers (the ones you are claiming to be targeted by the showing)? Or what about people i.e. see colon that was underwhelmed - how will that impression follow on to other people, friends etc he talks to?

At this point, I think it's very much in Microsofts interest not to get any negative perception at all. I'm very sure that regardless of whom exactly this showing was targeting, that they could have pulled something off in favour of everyone. A showing where people like myself, you and those customers that don't surf the net walk away in thinking *wow* - this is leaps and bounds beyond anything that we can currently find on PS2 and Xbox. This is *amazing*. I want one *now*. PlayStation what??!11

PS: I'm not at all claiming no one liked it - but if you surf a bit around, I think you'll be very hard put to find many loud, positive and overwhelmed impressions of that showing - and contrary, I think that "perception" will carry off to many more, last but not least the very casuals you are refering to. At this point, if Microsoft wants to grab that headstart, they need all the positive mindshare they can get. Critical and negative perception is what they simply do not want at this point in time.

It's difficult to impress certain people who already have their mind made up. Before the sneak peak, I was actually on the fence about Xbox360. After this event I've decided to buy one this Xmas. I don't even care what happens at E3, since what Xbox360 provides is good enough for me, especially when I'm also going to be buying a Revolution.

I've heard some people claim that a lot of preorders have come in and are coming in. May not be due only to the MTV show but MS did coordinate with a lot of media outlets to release the official specs. and other info. once the MTV show aired.

There may be no such thing as bad publicity. It may all have been about brand positioning and awareness. If nothing else, make sure as many people as possible have heard of "Xbox 360."

MS hires celebrity personalities all the time, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien being notable examples, to help tout new products. They don't always buy airtime for these intros but it must work if they keep spending money on celebrities.
