detfx and dx9 spec

If I remember correctly, the DX9 spec requires 24bit floating point precision, and this was presumably a major factor in why nvidia has been unable to secure WHQL cert thus far.

I just browsed through the nvidia site and noticed the new DetFXs claim to be WHQL certified for the GFFX series only (sounds like the first catalyst 3.0 release ;) ). So, has anyone been able to check up on whether nvidia is truly running at 24bit, or have they been able to convince MS that it doesn't matter?

I thought NVidia adopted the IEEE 32 bit standard and can only fall back to 16 bit lower quality precision - so when a directx 9 game asks for high colour precision what does NVidia do - ignore it - surpass it and take a huge performance hit or go the low road for speed with poorer image quality?

Interesting question.

I think it was that the minimum for texture addressing was 24 bit and the minimum for arithmetic instructions was 16 bit with the precision hint. . . I might be wrong, though. . . It was posted here a while back. . .
