The National Republican Congressional Committee tried to scam me out of some money today. They called and left a message on my machine telling me a senator wanted to give me a National Leadership Award. I called them back today and the woman who answered played a nice pre-recorded political speech by Tom Delay, where he told me how great of a person I was, and how he knew all the horrible things I had to deal with as a small business owner. After the recording ended, the woman told me that they wanted to make me a honorary co-chairman of the Business Advisory Council. She went on to tell me that I would receive an autographed photo of the President, as well as an opportunity to meet him at a black tie dinner. I told her I'd think about it and hung up. I did a little googling and ran across a Washington Post articlefrom 1999 that talked about the exact same situation I found myself in. Apparently it's all a big scam just to get campaign contributions out of small business owners, under the false pretext of giving them awards and offering them the opportunity to give their opinions on business related issues in the government.
My telephone number is on my state's No Call list, which is supposed to prevent telemarketers from soliciting me, and imposes fines on companies that call me. I would love to go to the consumer protection agency and file a complaint about the NRCC's use of telemarketing, but unfortunately the politicians who drafted up the legislation for our state's No Call list decided to exempt calls related to non-profit or political organizations from having to obey it. Go figure.
It's nice to experience first hand the kind of bullshit that gets the money to elect the politicians that are supposed to be representing us. It reminds me of why I refuse to join or support any political party.
