So what I really want to know, is what is the IQ of the average chicken? Because if Cell can do 16,000 pathfinding chickens, and (assuming) each chicken has an IQ of 1, then could Cell model one giant super-chicken with an IQ of 16000? Would it want to take over the world? In game, maybe instead of an end of level boss, you'd have to fight your way though millions of minion chickens, to get to the super-chicken.

    I'll get me coat...

i was doing something like this recently (only 1000 chickens here but could ramp it up to say 10,000 i think hmm ill try it)

same method i expect, each scenegraph leaf node, stores the contained chickens, thus greatly dropping the number of checks

as has been pointed out the deal is not with the number of polygons, be it 10 or whatever (the drawing part is a non issue),
collision avoidence at this great number is pretty hard ( unless u make the chickens slow down heaps or worse come to a standstill ) cause one chickens movement possibly impacts a lot of chickens around it

just had a look at the paper, craig reynolds (the father of boids)

:lol2: I would be interested in a 16,000 Pokemon war game. The last standing Pokemon will take over the world.
