Dreamcast was kind of a stupid name too :idea:
 
add playstation to that list too .


Only cool names were the jaguar (which failed ) and the n.e.s that was cool


(also add in to suckiness intelivision , collecovision , atari , and any pre 1981 console )

When the "vision" of the Connecticut Leather Company turns out to be video games, you've gotta expect that to fail miserably.
 
Jaguar's lame IMO. It's a cat, not a console. DreamCast is good - it's about forging dreams; imagery of imaginative stuff. PlayStation's cool - it's about games and playing. Genesis was Megadrive over here, which is pretty lame. NES/SNES - does exactly what it says on the tin but that's really a description, not a name. Like Sony Home Gaming Appliance...

All Nintendo's names have been pretty pants. GameCube's alright, in the PlayStation vein. XBox sort of works as something to say, but it's a mouthful. X is a long syllable without a nice abbreviation. PlayStation shortens to "Pee-ess (two)" in a way XBox doesn't.

Next XB should be called FunBox :D
 
Yeah...Xbox360 is awkward sounding. I told my nephew the other day that MS will have an unveil on May 12 and that the most likely name was Xbox360 and he started laughing. LOL!!!"What's that a skateboarding trick". :LOL:

I think Dreamcast is a really good name for a console, as is the playstation brand name. None of the others have ever bothered me though.
 
Another vote for DreamCast here as well. I loved that name.
I do like Playstation tho. I just love the Idea of....
"At work I use a workstation for productivity. So at home I should use a Playstation for entertainment"
 
Heh I remember when I was a kid videogame machines were often just called Nintendo. "let's play some Nintendo" etcetera. I think that's the best name; not too long, not too silly, but still a little playful =]

PC Engine and PC-FX sounds pretty cool to me. OTOH TurboGrafx-16 sounds pretty stupid. :LOL:

Oh btw Dreamcast was named after the companies behind the console. SEGA, NEC, Hitachi, and Yamaha made up the dream cast or dream team.

I always heard from Sega execs that it was named that because its games would look like dreams that were broadcast on the TV.

Yeah, that's the explanation I heard too. "It's a console that broadcasts dreams". I like that concept, nice name when you think of that :)

Maybe it had multiple reasons why the name is what it is.
