Inside sources point to removal of buttons for Microsoft's next console on the back of extensive internal research

15:44 Microsoft is set to drop the black and white buttons from the current Xbox pad for the next console's model, according to a highly placed source operating close to Microsoft US.
While the world awaits the first official showing of the console known internally as 'Xenon', expected at the Game Developers Conference in the US next month (see here), it seems Microsoft is already briefing its closest allies as to what set-ups to prepare for.

Our senior development source, speaking anonymously, said: "Microsoft has been talking to us a lot on the subject of Xenon [Xbox 2], and has said its studies show that the black and white buttons are the two least used and hardest to use buttons on the standard Xbox pad, so are therefore unlikely to feature in the Xenon version."

We certainly wouldn't disagree with Microsoft's alleged line of thinking here; in many people's experiences those buttons are quite unwieldy and so wouldn't be the greatest loss in the world. It also shows, moreover, that following the negative criticism the Xbox hardware itself received, along with the first iteration of the controller, Microsoft is being very pro-active to ensure similar mistakes are not repeated for the next model.

We contacted Microsoft UK for comment and a spokesperson issued the stock "this is a rumour and we do not comment on rumours" response.

Don't expect official clarification of this imminently, but do expect an awful lot more on all next-gen systems over the next few months. With early development kits for Xbox 2, PS3 and PSP already in place in key developers across all territories, major announcements are only just around the corner; we'll keep you bang up to date with all developments as they happen.

Really? PS3 development kids out? :?:

Fredi

PS: Sorry for the subject change, but I did not write that article. ;)

"Key developers" could be referring to a very small and very trusted amount, of course. The PSP's would be more widespread.

How will they deal with backwards compatibility if they don't have all the buttons they need? Is this a sign that Xbox 2 won't be able to play Xbox 1 games?

Doesn't necessarily mean that it won't have those buttons, just that they won't be the same. It could mean that they'll go with larger ones in better position (hey, I'd like a good 6-button controller out there), and they could still replicate their use otherwise with different button combinations and/or just allowing you to use your old controllers still.

articles like this are a problem. they make it sound as if these next gen consoles are right around the corner. they're not.

they could be as far as over 2.5 years away from U.S. release. certainly PS3 and N5 are.

Xbox2 might launch as soon as Nov 2005. still a year and 9 months off, at least.

They should make the black and white buttons the same size as the main buttons, and closer. That simple.

The only two reasons why they suck on the original pad were, they were too small, and they were way too high up (gripping the pad normally, it's quite a stretch to hit the topmost button [can't remember its colour offhand]).

I hope they will come up with a different placement or at least two new butons instead, 4 buttons and two triggers alone just don't cut it. Personally I think the B&W placement on the S pad is rather good...

Yep, the PS3 development kids were conceived about nine months ago.
Most, if not all of them are 'out' now, they just need a year or two to mature before being any use.
This confirms the rumours that first PS3 games will be produced by new Sony internal studio 'Busy Little Hands' in Thailand.

No buttons on controller.

MS surely has abondoned backward compatibility....
Well, if they've perfected mind-control technology, then frankly, i don't think they need to worry about backwards compatability.
