ATI Radeon HD 69xx PCIe power connector issue

What happened to the subcontractor's QC policy ?
How does it impact quality exactly? Unless you want to run them with a custom heatsink in a box with a window and you care about the aesthetics.

Scandalous, heh ...

Vincent, Gongo and Magnum_Force ... I hope to god you're trolling or <14 years old ...

And I'd imagine a new cooler revision would be cheaper than a new PCB revision just to move the power connectors which would mean a longer PCB AND a modified cooler since one of the mounting holes is right there.
Not neccessary. Just move the molex power connector up slightly. It might protrude marginally from the shroud, but surely beats having to modify the PCB, cooler AND the shroud to fit a longer board in there... ;)

The PCB would probably be the cheapest/least complicated part to modify in such a manner anyway. Or maybe they could simply source a smaller/different shape PCIe power connector that won't interfere with the fan wheel or whatever it is it interferes with...

In any case, this is a complete non-issue. Only an idiot would make any deal out of it since the impact is cosmetic only, and barely so at that.

Here is the retail 6950PRO and I clearly see this issue.

Shtal, why are you feeding this thread?
Whoever designed the HSF for Cayman screwed up the connector clearance such that the fan would hit it. To fix it they filed down a corner of the molex connector. The modification has no impact on performance, safety or even cosmetics (since you can't see it with the cooler on).

So what's your point? Just trolling?

The modification to the power connector seen on some Radeon HD 6900 series cards was a conscious development decision. The reference boards use both fan and heatsink designs from multiple vendors and it was discovered some material produced on initial designs required adjustment. As a result we modified the PCIe power connector for a very small number of boards using affected components, which were mostly used for samples, as the most time and cost efficient solution to bringing the product to market in volume. This minor modification to the connector in no way affects the operation of the card and our partners have designed solutions which do not require this modification.

Case closed, I guess.
