Argos drops GC?

There was a story somewhere about this with quotes from Argos. It said that this is a limited time offer on GC (until April). There was no mention of dropping GC.

There were quotes in the link i posted.

"Sales have been slow so we wanted to speed these up by selling it at a good price," according to Argos marketing director Paul Geddes. "In terms of what happens after that, we haven't yet taken a decision on the format."

i think there may be a little too much knee jerking goin on. This was over at IGN boards: from, sponge.com

"GameCube sales again rose in week-on-week comparisons, this time by a further 5%, no doubt buoyed by the release of the hotly anticipated Super Monkey Ball 2 and the continued success of Capcom’s Resident Evil 0.

Xbox slipped another 5%, a fact that has surprised many given the much-heralded launch of Xbox Live last week, and the media attention it gained."

It'll also help the Cube that Metroid Prime comes out anyday there. Maybe Nintendo will start paying attention to Europe now. Miraclelously it aint dead yet..no thanks to Nintendo.

there is also mention of comet dropping the cube on newtechnix.

if you look on the site: http://www.comet.co.uk

you'll find PS2, xbox but no GC :(

why do they seem all dropping the GC ?

were they still selling the dreamcast when it was seloing as bad as the GC ?

hope this trend will change w/ metroid, zelda..

Your going to see stories of every shop "dropping" Gamecube now. Its all sensationalist journalism. Since the Dixons price drop every store is dropping price to match/beat Dixons. So using hack logic that means they're all dropping GC ;)

Look at the Argos stories, "Argos dropping GC" despite the fact that at no point in any of Argos's quotes do they ever mention dropping GC.

were they still selling the dreamcast when it was seloing as bad as the GC ?

They were still selling DC when it was selling less then GC was selling before the price drop (and at that time DC was selling for £75 with 3 free games). Of course GC sales are already much higher now. I've heard GC sales have jumped 300% since the price drops.

Gamecube sales may be picking up slightly, but if you go into the stores then you can't help noticing just how much the GC games have been discounted over the last few months! You'd find it hard to pay over £25 for a GC game that has a RRP of £39.99. Whether this is Nintendo discounting to the retailer, or the retailer trying to boost sales independantly isn't clear, but remember that Dixons group claimed that they weren't dropping the Cube......up until last week!
Either way it doesn't bode well and I'd hate to see the PS have the market to itself again. Hopefully this is just a blip and GC AND Xbox will now take off.......competition is good for everyone and I feel that there's more than enough room for all 3.

In france, there is no sign of any discounting hardware or software on the GC.

Seeing REZero at 64E, I would like :(

i confirm what wazoo said.
i saw no sign of this trend in france.

no discount except the (very badly advertised) standard one.

They're selling like hotcakes with the new price AFAIH. I suppose we'll see with the next U.K sales figures, anyone knoe when they come out? My guess for GC numbers would be about 30,000 sold in the week of the price cut.

You'd find it especially hard if you shop at Dixons. Because all there GC games are £24.99 :) But you'd have no problem finding plenty of full price GC games at places like GAME, HMV, TRU, Argos ect.

Well it looks like I was being far too concervative when I said GC had likely sold 30,000 in the week of this price cut. Because according to that article its selling around 35,000 a week at Argos alone! I wonder when we'll see some more U.K console hardware sales?

Hopefully Nintendo will see this and realise that they need to drop the price of GC to at least £99.99 with a free game. I mean the GameCube has been selling for around that price in the U.S for over 6 months now (£99.99 = $157) so its about time we got the same price here.

:D Other news. GC no.1 in hardware/software charts:-

 How about this for marketing. They could increase market share for both GBA/GAMECUBE via a software or hardware promotion. Buying either software or hardware on either gives discounts on the other platform. They could try this with GBA/CUBE compatible software. A Nintendo loyalty scheme. Is anyone selling the 2 platforms as a package minus software? This might be better than some game offers going around considering that GBA can now be had for £50.

the only thing this article said is that argos sold 5000 consoles on a single day. but can we expect to repeat this performance each day of a week ?
it appears unrealistic to me.

at least argos choosed to retain gamecube !

Maybe NINTENDO should concentrate efforts on supermarkets. Where families visit more often than forementioned retail outlets. At least recent events are a well needed change in momentum. By the way some Curry's outlets were selling 64mb Datel memory for £5.61.

They said sales of GC increased from an average of 100 per day to 5000 per day. Surely an average per day would have to be taking over at least a few days or a week or something? I don't know, maybe it was just bad wording in the article and it was only one day.
