Gaming software company AppLovin Corp (APP.O) on Tuesday made an offer to buy peer Unity Software Inc (U.N) in a $17.54 billion all-stock deal, looking to tap into growing demand for three-dimensional gaming.

Both companies make software used to design video games. Game-making software has also been expanding to new technologies such as the so-called metaverse, or immersive virtual worlds.

The enterprise value of the deal is $20 billion. AppLovin will offer $58.85 for each Unity share, which represents a premium of 18% to Unity's Monday closing price.

I'm not sure Unity really cares. They're focusing on mobile and other platforms where monetization is the primary driver for game development. And it's an offer by a mobile game company.

Some related reports for Unity:

It's official now: US game software developer Unity to set up China JV, valued at $1 billion. Partners including Alibaba, China Mobile, Oppo and Bytedance's Douyin Group. Unity will retain the majority ownership and control of the Chinese JV.

San Francisco-based Unity has sought strategic investors to join it in a business valued at over $1 billion during talks, said two of the people, declining to be identified as they were not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.

Unity's spin-off plan is being driven by a desire to see its software used more extensively in China in areas as varied as smart city modelling to industrial design, as well as in the metaverse. Potential investors Unity has been speaking to have made big bets on the metaverse.
