From what I hear even on decent AMD64 CPUs H.264@720P is slow as hell...

As far as I know the R4xx and GF6 GPUs can't accelerate H.264 decode (though it is a MPEG4 derivative... why can't you offload some parts of it, like motion estimation, deblocking etc)

Unless you like slide shows of course ;-)

Supposedly the r520 will support H.264 acceleration.

I'm going to hold off until the final release. This build has too many bugs.

quicjtime? anyone acctually uses that?

H264 is not Quicktime, it's a new encoding standard. It's supposed to give better quality at lower bitrates, but is currently slow and very CPU intensive. It's not that surprising because it's still new and being improved, where Mpeg 4 has had time to get more mature.

You may be associating H264 with Quicktime because Apple have just announced Quicktime 7 with H264 support, but other companies (such as Nero) have been supporting H264 for a while already.

The problem of offloading some parts is that although it is similar in a lot of respects to MPEG4 it is not identical, and if the hardware has not been designed to cope with the differences then it can't really be used.

H264 is "MPEG4 Part 10" (used on the PSP)

I guess that if NV's video engine worked, it could help decoding (or even encoding) that.

Most (in fact I would say all) companies only accelerate a portion of the MPEG4 spec, there are bits of mpeg 4 which are not likely to really be used except in specialised cases. Just because a company has support for mpeg4 doesnn't mean they can automatically accelerate H.264

Yeah I use the Real Player alternative but I have to use the Quicktime player cause I have Trillian and it needs it for the vdo conferencing features...as far as Quicktime goes...its no prob...I like it...well I dont mind it...its just another player...
