They would be foolish (which I am sure they are not)...of they even dream about dropping Playstation....Playstation Brand name is worth billions...it is a household name....infact PLAYSTATION is more imp than even CELL!

The PlayStation branding is too successful to be replaced, even housewives know if you want to play game, you need a PlayStation, and they tend to associate the PlayStation name with TV game consoles, no matter what brands you are really using. If they know you have a TV game console, when they tell others about it, they will usually tell others that you have a PlsyStation at home.

Even my wife talks like that although she knows that there are a couple of consoles in the market (as what she saw in my room), she still says playing PlayStation than playing games on a console. My relatives are like that, too. PlayStation has stuck deep in their minds.

yeah... well u dont know what i had to go through when i had to explain to a friend of mine why games for PS2 dont work on PC or XBOX or GAMECUBE or any other disc based device... even DVD players....

he just could not grasp the concept.... he thought it was stupid that a DVD player could not play games the way PS2 did.... and also that his new laptop could not play PS2 games....

i'm being serious here....

and dont get me started on the fact that the games are on DVD format.... he started calling them DVD-games

god he was hopeless

And on the portable side, the name "Gameboy" has the same influence as "PlayStation".

No matter you are on GBC/GBA/GBA-SP or WS/WSC or NG Pocket, they will just say "Gameboy".

Actually this is the best status, that you could achieve as a manufacturer, your product name is so well known that it becomes a synonym for all products on the market-segment. Same thing happend to walkman ... Sony would be insane to rename it.

Is it just me, but I have a vague memory of an early xbox advertisement campaign (in eu, not sure if it was the same in other parts of the world).

The ad was something like the green x being the Christmas Star, and the text was something like 'Christmas comes early this year'

Sony had quite similar ad when PS2 was launched in europe. only then the blue led was the star.

I've tried to find these ads afterwards, but have not succeeded. So I'm not quite sure if it happened just in my head.

It almost looks like MS delibrately tried to 'fool' the average joe, and tried to ride on the fact that many people do think xbox is a new PlayStation.

Sony is Japan's most well-regarded brand name for a second year running, according to a survey by Nikkei BP Consulting. The maker of the PlayStation 2 and uncountable other electronic devices led a field of more than 1,000 brands, according to a sample pool of some 23,600 Japanese consumers.

The top five were as follows: Sony, Walt Disney, the Fuji Television network, Studio Ghibli (Hayao Miyazaki's animation company, makers of Spirited Away), and car manufacturer Toyota.

Maybe they should just name it 'Playstation' and make some weird model number in tiny lettering somewhere on the casing? Like they do with WEGA TV's for example. There are no WEGA 1, WEGA 2, WEGA3s...

People would be asking for the 'Playstation' or 'new Playstation' and they would be getting PS3. Today, actually, many uninformed people go to the store and ask for 'Playstation', when they actually want PS2.
