Android and virtual reality

Android specific VR discussion. It looks like android/mobile is huge player in vr world based on volume. Perhaps it's time to have dedicated thread for android vr.

Google is primed to make something happen with android and vr:
It looks nearly certain that Google will launch an Android-powered VR headset that works without a phone or PC. Android Police spotted an "Android VR" placeholder in Google's Play Developer Console

The other player ofcourse is samsung and oculus who built gearvr and software sdk for it http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/wearables/gear-vr/

Really interested to see what they produce (and how much it'll cost). If they can get it fast enough, using project tango tech for tracking would have some interesting possibilities.

From a few rumors I heard its just going to use the newest snapdragon apu with 4 gigs of ram . It will have lte and wifi . its also going the single screen route with only software IPD adjustment.

I heard the price tag all in they were shooting for was $400.

It could be interesting but I think with Minecraft on Gear VR the battle is done for the market. I don't see any android games that would make a good vr experience and if they have to start from the ground up they are going to be way behind

Google announced Daydream, which is an entire mobile VR ecosystem, including reference mobile phone specifications, design guidelines for Daydream compatible HMDs, and a software distribution platform built for navigation within VR.

The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and CNN have agreed to bring their immersive news content to the platform. Hulu, Netflix, Imax, Lionsgate and other video production and hosting companies have also signed on. Big name game studios are also getting behind Daydream. EA, nDreams, CCP Games, Ubisoft, MinorityVR and others have committed to releasing content when Daydream launches later this year.

It's quite unclear to me who will make products based on google reference design. Is google going to release hardware or is it all up to other companies to productize something? Software support looks very strong though.

I guess it's only partners who will do the headsets.
Google did not offer a specific date for Daydream, but it said that the platform will launch this fall with many partners on board. Samsung, HTC, LG, ZTE, Xiaomi, Huawei, Asus and Alcatel will all launch Daydream-ready phones, and Google said there will be many HMDs launched with them.

Google did say that they're doing a headset at the end of one of their livestreams. They'll presumably be a HMD for the Nexus 6p since that's their developer platform. I guess with Samsung, they'd just have GearVR go through Daydream certification?

I was just watching the IO controller to talk (it's a bit cody for a while and start talking about game design after 20mins)

The controller does orientation and acceleration. You can point and swing but as you'd expect, it's not tracked in 3d space. A few of the demos 'pin' the controller the player's body.

I'm interested to see how those experiences feels.

Daydream doesn't seem to be a minimum effort entry. Good for google! More in the link what defines a daydream compatible phone
Google’s ambitious Daydream VR platform for Android hinges on a combination of hardware and software to enable a high quality VR experience. To ensure the desired level of performance, Google will certify phones of a certain minimum specification as ‘Daydream Ready’. But the company says that even today’s top phones are unlikely to qualify for the title.
