360 controllers losing link

Okay.. this is getting retarded.

The first time my 360 controller started losing is link, I changed my batteries and everything was fine.

Over the past two weeks, my 360 controller has repeatedly lost its link (in the middle of some very bad gaming moments, of course), and I've swapped out my batteries for new ones and nothing seems to help.

Honestly, I don't know if this happens in any game other than Madden 09 because that's what I'm playing right now.

When I turn on my console and activate my controller the link seems to stay for the normal amount of time. But when I start playing Madden 09, after about 30 minutes the controller link fails every 5 minutes.

The batteries are fine. If the link fails and I switch the batteries with new ones, the link still fails five minutes later.

I've tried to vary the times I'm playing the game to see if maybe there's interference from other people (I live in an apartment complex) the same time every night, but the time of day doesn't seem to matter.

So it's not an issue of my neighbors coming home and turning on their equipment that is disrupting my signal.

Has anyone else had this problem? I googled the problem (as any good netgeek would do), and the only answers I get are about changing the batteries.

My batteries are fine. But my controller to system link keeps failing. Which is REALLY annoying when it's 3rd and 15 and you've sent an all out blitz and are shifting your DL and your MLB and trying to move your defensive backs into press coverage and all of a sudden the control goes out and when you get it back the CPU is throwing the ball down the field because your guys aren't in the right spot.

Has anybody else had any problems with their 360 controllers losing their link?

It's possible I just got a bad controller and need to buy another one... that's fine, I won't bitch about it. But if there is an interference issue then I'll get angry.

I've never heard of this problem.

Something that may help in your troubleshooting - I have the PC wireless controller dongle attached to my PC. When I want to use the 360's controllers with it and they're synced to the 360, I have to do the pairing again. That I imagine would be the same as having two 360's in the same room - each controller seems to remember it's parent device, and I've never turned on the controller and had the wrong device detect it. Given they're in the same room, I'd be surprised if your problem to turn out to be interference with another 360.

Hope that helps.

Is there a new source of interference in your home (or in adjacent homes)? 2.4 GHz baby monitors are notorious for interfering with 2.4 GHz cordless phones, and I expect they also affect wireless networks and 360 controllers. If you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, you may notice new issues with the phone as well, if a source of interference is to blame.

No, my phones are 5.8 GHz and they've been there the entire time. So the problem should have been there constantly, not just a recent issue.

Both neighbors have children, they could have baby monitors that are causing interference, I suppose. I'll go check the battery terminals in the controller, that's something I haven't done but my controller is less than a year old, I wouldn't think age or muck should be an issue.

I'll try re-pairing the controller to the 360 and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Try the charge & play cable. It doesn't send data through the cable, but if there is some kind of loose connection causing the problem, maybe having a steady charge will keep it from loosing power?

i got this problem too, you only need to fix the battery compartment.
it become loose after some time.

basically just :
- remove the batt compartment from gamepad
- look at the bottom, see the small silver metal?
- take apart the battery compartment.
- now bend the silver etal to make better contact.

done :)

Mod edit :

i have writen the detailed instruction here : http://orangpelupa.blogspot.com/2008/09/repair-xbox-360-gamepad-turn-off-by.html
i hope it fix your gamepad :)

ugh, i cant post pictures showing the detailed instruction, i cant edit my post, the antibot in this forum is frightening...

Mod : The amount of spambots is frightening! Trust me, a little patience waiting for the mod team to pick up on issues is far better than the alternative!

yeah, in my gamepad, it just loose the contacts.

my gamepad start acting up like that after about 2months.
after i "bend" the silver metal inside the batt compartment, it work normally again.

Have you had any luck following orangpelupa's  advice?

Cheers

No, I haven't. His advice involves breaking the battery compartment and then putting it back together with tape.

I'm going to try an alternate method of simply trying to pry the contact on the battery compartment from the outside (instead of breaking the compartment and prying it from the inside), to effect the same change of the contact sticking out more.

I'll let you know if it works.

Rancid. I think i have a few battery cases here if u need them. let me know and I can drop them in the mail for ya.

@rancid

i just found a new, safer method.

- remove the battery compartment from gamepad.
- remove the batteries
- see the metal thing on the bottom of the gamepad?
- put some thick doubletape there.

and voila, the gamepad will work normally again

*note:
- as an alternative, you can stick the doubletape on the gamepad case.
- you also can use Styrofoam, cardboard paper, or anything. it just to make it give more pressure.

thanks,
i hope your gamepad get well soon :)

ah forget to say this importnt thing.

just cut the doubletape small. the same size with the metal thing.

if you cut too big, the connection wont be made and it wil be damn hard to fi the batt compartment to the gamepad.
