Quantum Error [PS5, PS4, XBSX]

’Quantum Error is fully targeting the specs of the PS5 and will not be held back by the PS4 at all. It would be unfair to our fans, and to ourselves, to hinder our vision for Quantum Error because of targeting a lower spec. The game is being built for PS5 and then will be down ported to PS4. The big difference between the two is definitely going to be the SSD, as the PS4 version will definitely have to embrace a more traditional loading with probably loading screens, whereas the PS5 will be instantaneous loading.’

Q: You’ve confirmed that we’ll see a whole host of Ray Traced effects in the title, including shadows and reflections. How is the PS5 hardware in terms of ray tracing in your eyes, and also – as a games developer, what is HW based RT allowing you to accomplish – especially given the atmospheric nature of the game I imagine (like titles such as Control) it would benefit greatly with RT.

A: Currently, we can only speak on the Unreal Engine side of these details. But what I can say is what the Ray-Tracing is allowing us to do is pretty amazing. Visually, QE is starting to take on an almost Silent Hill modernized type of feel, there is a “thick” feeling to the air and the lighting we are doing makes you very uneasy, even when there are no enemies present. And it’s the same for 3D audio… sound is the most important thing in gaming after the visuals and hearing the world around you is quite the experience.

Q: On the same subject, what are you planning to do with the PS4 version of the code, will it use more traditional effects such as Shadow Maps / SSR?

A: The PS4 version of Quantum error will definitely be missing all the awesome new features of the PS5, like ray tracing, 3D audio enhancements, and CPU heavy features. SSR will definitely be the technique used on PS4; we will have to scale back some of the physics and resolution to 1080p.

I think the first video (that started this thread) was essentially proof of concept for it. The game had barely begun development.

I picked this up the other day and have put about 10 hours into it. It has been tickling the indie horror itch for years. And while it is somewhat indecipherable and rough in all respects, I'm having some fun with it. If you have a Dead Space, Resident Evil, System Shock, Prey, and Doom3 brain compartment and you perhaps found joy in titles such as Hollow, Solarix, Tartarus, Alpha Prime, Phantaruk, and/or Syndrome, this might be worth considering.

I make no guarantees though. 😁

The cutscenes are strangely high quality. The gameplay is less stunning but it's still interesting to look it. They really love UE5 particle effects and smeary RT effects. Framerate is solid. It's really dark. It has this thick and rich air of sci-fi dystopia and cosmic horror. Their storytelling is weak so plan on interpreting events yourself. It's basically a Resident Evil evil corporation scenario but reminiscent of System Shock 2 in how it plays. You are a firefighter who was a soldier. Lots of tools and guns. There are character and item upgrades. So many half baked gameplay systems. Enemies range from humans to bizarre otherwordly creatures in the vein of crazy things from STALKER and creepy fast cyborgs. There are RE-style boss fights. The enemy AI is...interesting. I think they tried to make it unpredictable and it is eerie, but it also sometimes just beelines you. It's a strange game, and at least a bit original. I think this could have been a great game if it would have had more development grunt behind it.

So this was actually released afterall???
Yeah a year ago and it was ummm...not well received. I think that's mostly because they wanted $60 for it and they also apparently fanned some console fanboy wars on Twitter by saying the Xbox couldn't run it well enough. That's most of the discussion I can find about the game. The PC, PS4 and XBox versions didn't happen. The PS5 version is very buggy but I'm having a bit of fun playing it.

I finished the game. Clocked in at 25 hours. 5 of those were a restart because I broke story progression when I backtracked to the beginning room and it caused the story to reset. I also fell through the world and got stuck a few times while trying to get to places I surely was not supposed to go to. And it crashed several times. Hehe.

But actually I really liked the game. It's a super ambitious half baked surprisingly creative horror shooter extravaganza with many locations and even vehicles. Weird cutscenes. The writing is pretty terrible and nothing makes any sense but hey whatever. Gotta get back to running around on the surface of Jupiter!

I might need to play again because while I found the Celestial Space Suit, I missed the Celestial Firefighter Gear. Gold is pretty cool too though. :D
