Introduced yesterday, supposedly does 4K and supports all Nintendo 64 cartridges regardless of region.
Based on FPGA they've been optimizing for 4 years. Pre-order for $250.

Is there any chance this thing actually survives NLA (Nintendo Lawyer Army)? They claim it doesn't break any copyright laws, doesn't support ROMs but only original cartridges etc.

So you have to buy carts to play it? That's a niche of a niche! Great for collectors, but useless for the mainstream.

No analog video output on this is a fail in my eyes.

Die hard retro gamers buy stuff like this, and die hard retro gamers prefer and play on CRT.

Or maybe people who still have their original console and games.
Yes, that's why I said great for collectors. That must be a tiny audience though.

Even with analogue CRT output, why would a retro gamer want to violate the true experience? It almost only makes sense as a replacement console for a real one that broke. If you already have the console and carts and are interested in retro gaming, you'll be playing on real hardware...what precisely is the value of this? And if you don't and want the console experience on modern TVs, do you really want to be buying physical cartridges?

Only makes sense to me if there's a cart you can dump digital ROMs onto, which then likely comes foul of Nintendo's legal interests.

Performance!!

Having the ability to play games like Ocarina Of Time or Goldeneye on a CRT, at a locked frame rate on something that's 'plug and play' would be appealing to a lot of people.

And increased image quality, they could keep the render resolution the same but down sample it for the analog output.

But that's not the true console experience. If you are wanting an improved experience over the original, why use a CRT? Why not upscale to 120 fps 2160p? At which point, why use hardware and not just an emulator?

Because UI and a lot of other elements don't look right on a modern display, at 4k.

2D games also look like dog shit on a modern display and no CRT filter will change that.

And a lot of older games also don't work correctly at frame rates higher than they were designed for.

I do take issue with the Nintendo being called "the greatest multiplayer system of all time"

It's all personal to be honest, I have more amazing multiplayer memories and times on Dreamcast then any other console.

16 player Halo over LAN was also epic as heck back in the day too.
