Thought some of you folks might be interested in media center software. XBMC just went Beta for their upcoming stable Mac OS X and PC ports. There's also a Live CD version to try out. These ports use OpenGL as their rendering API. Video rendering is accelerated using GLSL and ARB shaders on GPUs that support them. Some other points of interest:

  • Automated Metadata and Fanart for Audio and Video
  • Supports a truckload of file formats.
  • Apple TV Support (here's the mini HOWTO)
  • iTunes and iPhoto Support (non-DRM see here)

I love xbmc. Thanks for your work and those of the other devs/contributors. I have 8 or so of them running 24/7. :)

XBMC Live sounds fantastic, exactly what I've been after! Essentially a fast startup Media Player box that can run every format you want (apart from BluRay damnit!).

Now time to start hunting for a silent slimline box with LCD display, HDMI out and the power to decode 1080p. Better still would be TV recording support too but I will have to research that some more to see if it's doable under XBMC.

BTW I always loved XBMC on my old Xbox, but since I've moved to a HD set and media I've been left with solutions that always just fall short. At the moment I use my 360.
