Xbox360 in India...

Felt like posting this as it caught my eye.

As much as outsourcer game development studios are popping up in India lately, I still have to be curious how this will pan out, given that it's not exactly a society of "leisurely" people.

Also those prices... yowch. Rs. 20,000 ($425 US) for the core and Rs. 24,000 ($512 US) for the premium. I'm sure that extra is Redington's fees, though. But damn... that's a year of college (not including room & board).

Well, there are welthy people and maybe higher middleclass that could buy it, but going mainstream I guess is out of the question...

yikes... that's pretty steep for those just wanting to get ahold of the console... *sigh*... any news on how much the games will be?

Launched in two models-Xbox 360 and xBox 364

 Are they serious?

I was told years ago that 4 is an auspicious number among Indians, like 8 is popular with Chinese. However I have not verified the claim yet.

I hear it's more so in Buddhism, but I'm not sure of this. In Hinduism, it's certainly the case, but there are other examples (e.g., 1, 2, 5). For instance, in a Hindu wedding, the standard wedding gift is money, and typically in amounts involving an "auspicious" number and ending in one -- 11, 21, 51, 101, 201, 501, etc.

Ah....

Well, I do know that "4" would be a pretty poor choice in China, where phonetically, it sounds like "death" or something bad like that. :p

Japanese as well for that matter. "shi" as in 4, and "shi" as in death (though you can just as easily use "yon" for 4).

But xBox364 still sounds weird to me.

Interesting side-track topic - choice of console names for other markets. Are Sony going to be happy to go with 'PlayStation Death'? Also is software development going to find it's way into computerised versions of regional favourites like Kabaddi? Will India take to 'western games' in the same way Japan hasn't? In fct, I feel there's a close correlation between Hollywood style and gaming style - big, loud, lots of effects. Could India prefer a Bollywood style to their game?! That'd be very cool, musical games. Combine Singstar with RR maybe? How much adaptation would be needed for strong foreign cultures versus just supplying the same content from western markets?

As Shootmymonkey has already pointed there are to reading for four in Japanese: Shi, yo(n). Actually there more but that's another story. Only the Shi (the Sinojapanese reading has the notion of being unlucky, as it's pronounced the same way as death). Normally people use yon, unless a "special" counter (pieces, metres, etc.) is used. E.g.: it is yo-nen, 4 years or yon-en, four Yen but shi-gatsu, 4 months.
The same is more or less true of 7 which has the Sinojapanese reading shichi - that is also similar to shichi - debt.
More or less, this is the reason why the Japanese readings are preferred.

BTW, as far as I know, the three in Playstation 3 is pronounced the "engrish" way.

Funnily enough, X stands for no/false ("batsu") in Japanese daily life. XBox is the NoBox.

My guess is that 364 is just to differentiate between both models and to make 364 appear as a superior model than 360 to an average consumer, no any-other significance I think.

Shifty, Bollywood movies would make fantatic RPGs (though I hate RPGs), song/dance/music/romance/action/emotion...:p or maybe MGS6 will see Snake dancing around trees. :D

Edit: Name edited.

Plucking it straws, it could just be that someone misheard the announcement:

"There are two models, the Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Core"

Heard as:

"There are two models, the Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Four"

/possible
//worse things happen at sea

Why not? Nintendo seems to be happy with the Nintendo Piss.

;)

Areas like this may be where Wii and the 360 Core can make some impact in a couple years. Like SMM noted, $400 is a lot of money. Cheaper consoles (if they ever come! :p ) may appeal to markets that don't quite have the expendible income found in the US, Europe, and Japan.

I hope I don't come across as an arrogant Western jerk but I would've thought that areas like *this* are where GC, PS2 and Xbox 1 would perhaps make inroads?

Well, Nintendo tried already with iQue in China, I don't how successful that has been, though.

On the contrary there is a siezable amount of population in India which has plenty of money to spend and this group will infact spend the money on the most expensive console available just to show off.;)
