Xbox and untapped powers

How much more to go? :D

We hear often of Ps2 emotion untapped synthesized powers  , but what about the Xbox? The current games, are they using the full features of DX8?

Halo2 has good graphics, so does many others like Apex, Fable, DOA, PDO, BC, Duality. But are they the final deal? How much more optimising before Xbox chokes? Will we see big leap here?

I figured that must Xbox ports are using mostly DX7 stuffs, so when we have real DX8 goodness, be prepared to be blown away? Is there some Xbox Analyser?

Xbox developer? Qroach? Crazyace?

All consoles show improvements

There's plenty of room for improvements in graphics, as devs learn more about tuning their engines to be Xbox ( or GCube or PS2 or DC ) specific.
The best engines cater to the strenghs of the hardware while minimising the weaknesses, and that's something that needs experience.
If you take the quotes from the Halo developers they are increasing the visual impact of the new characters while actually reducing the polygons in the models - it'll be interesting to see the same techniques used in driving games which have often involved quite excessively detailed models in terms of vertex counts..

Thanks Cace! ;)
That was something cool and useful. So we can expect some sort of SH2 -> SH3 type of leap from the Xbox, or maybe even more?
It is so easy to dismiss Xbox potential by those haterzX, "oh crap! Xbox iZ PC, Xbox iz DX, blah blah blah..."

While I expect some significant improvements I don't expect huge landfalls of it... With Xbox (and to a lesser extent the GCN) you already have very mature, high-performance compilers, debuggers, in the case of Xbox APIs, hardware platforms that are largely known quantities with shallower learning curves. :)

If there's anything that could possibly be *easy* 8) about the PS2, it's improving your title after you've either released one, or have spent enough time fux0ring with it that tool updates, getting enough familiarity to actually exercise more of the resources, better engine design, and just applying lessons learned can provide you opportunities for tons of improvement...

Okay.

It is just that when i look at new Xbox games, many of them are looking better and better. Maybe the efficiency leap is not as high as PS2, but the visual impact between early/late generation games, is certainly as    , it actually has more IMHO.

It must have to do with using the programmable DX8 features. You know, putting good usage of bumpmapping. multitexturing and dynamic pixel lighting have that  effect. There is only so much you can do with polygons, you need de shaders!!

I guess you could tap more graphic powa by shrinking interactivity and game mechanics, and other useless things that do not show in screenshots nor videos :)

chap I'm currently on my 2nd Xbox and my store manager is on his fourth. Ok one was 'remanufactered' so to speak. Maybe MS should have put some of that power into the actual QC area. If this one goes out I will NOT get another one. I'll just have to listen to you guys talk about how great the next Halo and Rare game is.

I feel sorry for your broken Xbox  , but what does it have to do with this topic :?: :?: :?:

well you come onto our forums here and preach Xbox this and Xbox that. Like it's the messiah or something for games. I'm pointing out that graphics are only a part of the console. Perhaps quality control would have helped. But basically I'm just picking on you :D
