Vista SP1 officially released

Been running the RTM for about a month, works perfectly and improves performance, still slower than XP according to benchmarks though, not that I notice.

Any features that you're specifically talking about?

And as for SP1, whenever it shows up in my automatic updates list is when it will get installed on my home Vista rigs. We don't have a specific date or time range for deployment at the office yet...

Why did this take them so long? It was RTM in February.

Apparently rumors say they ran into troubles with this part of code:

Code:
Here's the source code: /*
TOP SECRET Microsoft(c) Project:Longhorn(TM) SP1
Estimated release date:2008
*/
#include "win95.h"
#include "win98.h"
#include "leopard.h"

char chew_up_some_ram[10000000];

void main () {
while (!CRASHED) {

if (first_time_install) {
make_10_gigabyte_swapfile();
do_nothing_loop();
search_and_destroy(FIREFOX | OPENOFFICEORG | ANYTHING_GOOGLE);
hang_system();
}

if (still_not_crashed) {
basically_run_windows_xp();
do_nothing_loop();
}
}

if (!DX10GPU()) {
set_graphics(aero, very_slow);
set_mouse(reaction, sometimes);
} // printf("Welcome to Windows 2000); // printf("Welcome to Windows XP");
printf("Welcome to Windows Vista");

while (something) {
sleep(10);
get_user_input();
sleep(10);
act_on_user_input();
sleep(10);
flicker_led_promisingly(hard_disk);
}

creat_general_protection_fault();
}

To be honest, I'd only heard they were taking some Vista exclusive features and adding them to XP. I'm not sure which ones or when. I don't even know enough about Vista to know what the exclusive features are.

That's some pretty sweet code above.

I bought a new lappy a week or so ago and it (obviously) came with Vista. Since I know it has a few extra mobility features (or more polished ones at any rate) I decided to resist my normal impulse to nuke the HD from orbit and install an nLited Windows XP. Since I'm not planning to do much gaming on it I figured I could tolerate Vista's resource hungry behaviour.

Yestersday I did nuke the HD from orbit but I installed the 64 bit version with SP1 pre-integrated after properly partitioning the drive. (the Lappy came with the 32-bit version installed and a single partition).

Overall I'm not finding anything different between pre-SP1 and SP1 but that's mostly because the notebook already came with most updates installed already. and my RTM Vista experience was limited to some performance tests. One thing I did notice is that the "Search" link in the Start menu is gone. You can still search using the text box but I'm not too bothered by it as that's where I do all my local searches from anyway. And from my understanding if you've been keeping your Vista RTM updated every second tuesday you're already pretty much at SP1 level anyway so you shouldn't expect any drastic changes.

Overall, it's still a painfully slow experience (no pun intended) when compared to XP but there's enough little improvements through out that make me want to stick with it, especially as a notebook OS and seeing as I'm not gaming with it. I can't wait to deploy XP SP3 on my desktop as I've been reading reports it can improve performance over SP2; specifically I've read the 10% figure being thrown around. By the way Vista is going on my lappy, I'm guessing my desktop (this or my next machine) will stay with nLited Windows XP at least until Windows 7.

I've heard that XP SP3 will improve Office 2007 loading times.

I'm still confused why people think Vista is slow. Aside from the issue in copying large files I still find it to be a faster and smoother experience that XP.

I installed SP1 last night but haven't used the PC since then. I'm not expecting to notice any difference though, namely because I didn't notice any issues with it it before SP1.

because they are running it on a standard xp era pc (2-3ghz single core cpu, 512mb ram) and you are not

eg:
xp:
click on desktop shortcut press delete instantly a msgbox pops up "do you want to send this file to the recycle bin" ok-cancel press ok and its deleted

vista:
click on desktop shortcut press delete instantly a msgbox pops up "calculating time required to complete operation" that takes 10-15 seconds then you finally get the "do you want to send this file to the recycle bin" msgbox

why does it take vista 15 seconds to calculate it will take less than 1/100 sec to delete a shortcut

Thats certainly not my experience. Granted i'm on a C2D E6600 with 2GB RAM but I just tried the scenario you mentioned (both with a shortcut and a 500MB file) and in both instances it occured exactly as you described above in the XP scenario. No delay whatsoever.

If I can do tht with a 500MB file then I would be amazed if it takes a P4 with 512MB 15 seconds to delete a shortcut.

the shortcut itself deleted instantly it was just the 10+ seconds of calculating time
why does it need to calculate it at all

Got my first reboot while playing TF2 yesterday, so it's a good SP!
:p

(Other than that noticed no change)

BTW I got that shortcut deletion issue, but only when the shortcut's target is missing. It's the most ridiculous thing I've seen in an OS in a good while...

Come to think of it, i've had the issue in the past if the target is missing when deleting shortcuts from the start menu.

Definatly no calculation time for a regular shortcut or file/folder though. I guess the delay if the source is missing is in the OS trying to look for it.
