Thinking of selling your PS4 or XBOne to fund a Pro or Scorpio? Note the serial#

Such is the risk of selling a lockable device on eBay without taking a ton of precautions. I remember when most of the scammers were the sellers, now it's the buyers.

I didn't even know there were banned consoles this generation. When did this happen?

Why can't he just login to his Sony account and see what hardware he had registered previously? That should obviously have the serial number of the hardware listed. Microsoft has this available. Does Sony not have the same functionality?

Doesn't seem like it. Since they would have deactivated it before selling it, I'm not sure it would help in this case anyway.

That is why you require good/enough feedback on the buyer in the first place.

Even with the serial, signed affidavit and video evidence let's face it eBay will probably side with the buyer and screw you especially in a case like this when it's just one sides word vs the other with no possible proof either way.

Local collection only so you have the buyers details and they are close enough to "pay a visit" if they try to take the prevrbial.

I'm pretty sure I've read accounts of people being scammed out of their digital PSN accounts and Sony not helping unless the person has been able to confirm the device serial number on which PSN was first activated, which seems insane. Hopefully that has changed.

Serial numbers of authorised devices are not visible in PSN. :nope:

the absolute distance this thread has now gone is amazing. I've been following since Mcorbo posted this one, and eBay sided with the Buyer, but now because of twitter they're now looking deeper into fraud.

Quite an interesting thread to follow, and yes, gotta be super careful

Update: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=226055745#post226055745

Seller was able to contact Playstation customer service and get his original PS4 serial number and confirm that the console is *not* banned on PSN. Apparently, even the CSR was surprised that they could retrieve the serial for a deactivated console.

Good on them for some unexpectedly good CS!
Any update on this story?

This makes me think that if I ever sell a console, which I probably won't, that...while I think this story is one in a million, I shall remove my account from it, although I could leave the games in the hd. Plus my account is associated with my actual email address, so it has to be a bit nightmarish to change everything.

@Cyan, yes, he updated the OP at GAF.

Seems like a GAF member helped him get the word out via twitter and eBay acknowledged it. They made the buyer send the console back. Ebay closed the case early and gave his money back before he received whatever the buyer sent him.

Good on Sony, and good on eBay for finally acknowledging the attempted scam.
