The solution for fast raytracing is a real hardware capable of raytracing. Saarland University is working on a prototype. It is clocked with 90 MHz and has the raytrace power similiar to a virtual P4-12 GHz. The prototype uses only one pipeline, parallelization can be done. Also more GPUs can be used on one card.
 
It can't be all that bad for a single line, 90 MHz architecture, right? Imagine what would be possible if it were scaled up to a 16-line, 500+ MHz configuration or maybe a 2-line, 2 GHz device. That's a whole lot more computation capability, no?
 
Ah, what you can do with the quake 3 source code....

BTW, I remember once hearing that 3dfx was working on hardware capable of doing ray tracing sometime after the voodoo2, but dropped it before development ever finished. Am I just imagining things, or can someone confirm this?
