3dfx paradoxically did more than any other company so far to hold the industry back. While the voodoo graphics and voodoo2 did things right by focusing on sheer speed, by the time the voodoo3 rolled around they were already slipping into obscurity. Unfortunately, their historically dominant position meant game designers took their hardware into account when making their games, thus limiting textures to 256*256, keeping everything within the small on-board memories of 3dfx boards and other similar quirks.
