I'm DOOM3d !!
Seriously, the past week has all been about the game for me. And by that, I mean I haven't actually been spending a lot of time playing the game but emailing id Software guys about various stuff. John Carmack has especially been responsive to my emails... over the past week or so, the ratio of emails sent-and-replied-by-him has risen to just above 50% -- a big jump for me! I really appreciate that. I have no idea if other media outlets email him on a regular basis and gets replies from him at a reasonable ratio... I hope so because I don't think it'd be wrong for me to say that we all hope John is more responsive In any case, Dave has just published an "interview" I have with John -- it's basically a collection of email correspondences I have had with John over the past week or so. The last Q&A in this interview is something I have not posted in our forums before. I think it tells us quite a bit about the rationale behind some of the decisions John has had to make throughout the development of Doom3. John, however, didn't reply to my last email, which was about the possibility of him doing something that takes into account the excellent experiment Humus did and incorporating it into what should be a forthcoming patch for the game. Ratio goes down!
I also, just a couple of hours ago, received a copy of the game from Activision. This is only the second time (as recent memory recalls) a game has been given to me, the first being Max Payne 2 (courtesy of Remedy's Markus Maki). The Doom3 package consists of the game CDs, a press kit CD and what I regard as the big bonus, a game guide. Now I get to really cheat . It's nice. I asked for a "review" copy of the game from Activision about a month back... now I'll have to decide if/when I should review the game at Beyond3D. If/When such a review happens, I'll be reviewing it more from a technology-centric view than the usual gameplay reviews we read about everywhere. Maybe it will be the start of something new here at Beyond3D -- tech-centric game reviews. Feedback?
I've been a little handicapped in my investigations of Doom3 as I only have two video cards with me presently, a R300 and a NV30. That should change soon as Dave will be sending me a NV40.
I had wanted to write such a @The Pulpit post quite some time back, after that semi-storm I raised about what Creative did. With the discussions that followed in the forum about that, I wouldn't have had much to add to many of MfA's posts there. Software patenting is just plain bad.
As you may all have learned, Dave had decided to upgrade the server with what little money we have earned thus far. Hope everyone has a better experience at Beyond3D.
I'd like to blab on about some of the stuff in my personal life but I know none of you are interested. Later.
