Racial Politics sack the NFL

In the case of the Lions, everyone seems to have behaved with admirable candor, despite the rule. [The rule that requires teams to interview at least 1 minority candidates before picking a coach]. The team indicated that it was interested in a famous white coach, Steve Mariucci. The Lions say they contacted five minority prospects for the job, but all five declined to be interviewed because they knew about Mariucci.

Result? $200,000 fine...sigh.

Well, I'm not sure I would put it that way. ;) But this is a case where

1) Common sense was completely lacking
2) The argument made for "promoting diversity" in NFL "management", is completely contradictory to the argument made for promoting diversity in the traditional workplace.

In other words, if there is a larger disproportionate amount of "white workers" in the lower ranks at the traditional office, and "naturally, upper management will be reflective of the make-up of lower class workers from which upper managemet comes" (as is the argument given for more Minority NFL coaches).... Then what's the issue with having an office full of pastey white folk?

I would think that -- gosh, 60% of the NFL players are black?! Something's not right there...way too imbalanced. That's not representative of the population...must target to recruit more white players such that blacks only make up 3% of the player pool. In fact, that would solve BOTH "problems!" At that point, the proportion of black coaches would nicely correspond to the proportion of black players. Problem Solved!

It's all patently obvious I would think...the solution to the NFL's problems is not more black/minority coaches...it's more white players!!

well one obvious answer to "what is wrong with an office of white folk" is that such bares the semblance of an all white club. Some seem to feel that if everyone highered fairly the work place would be completely diverse. I my mind if businesses higher passed souly on merit they ought to have the capacity to higher whomever they please as long as they are qualified for the job. No one seems to have a problem with the majority of the NAACP being african american. That must be do to the fact it is a group for the advancement of colored people - much as name suggests. Off hand, I wonder how well a group for the advancement of colorless people would sit with society.

People need to get over these Maccarthian office space race relation superstitions. I think we need to allow business to run itself.
