Would these be updates for developer tools or updates for users?

What good will email and web browser clients do without some text input capability?

These clients will have to have drivers for USB input devices like keyboards. Not exactly a good match for a portable gadget.

I think you will be able to watch TV on your PSP.

I thought you were joking, until I read this:

Sony has announced that the North American market will be able to buy a software/hardware addon for the PSP at an undetermined point in the future that will allow the handheld to stream television and presumably film from internet servers.

Speng.

The information seems to be a dummy data for test purpose.
However, it is apparent that the data was written by PSP development staff from Sony. The update file was on the official sony server.

One can do a lot with a USB2 interface. That's 60MB/s right there, at least in theory, and more than half that in reality. I think it's only to be expected that something like this appears sooner or later, it's the logical extension of a product such as the PSP.

Sony are talking TV over WiFi, not USB. Which is unsurprising. They want media content over wireless networks of every form and everything will be downloadable eventually (as they promised for PS2 but never got that off the ground).

Nice to see how updates will work, even if these are dummies. A good collection of codecs, a deal with Apple to use iTunes... How much upgradeability has PSP got though? eg. New codecs will take up RAM (storage) of some sort. How much space has PSP got for new codecs, drivers, etc.?

If anything, new codecs and drivers will take up space in the memory sticks. I don't think PSP has enough internal Flash memory to store more than its current OS/drivers. But i could be wrong. They certainly don't go in RAM or they'd be erased each time you turn the thing off.

A deal with Apple?

Not bloody likely.

A lot of the kids who asked for iPods this past Xmas will be asking for PSPs this Xmas.

Interesting.

But that is probably shareware/freeware written by an enthusiast. Not the result of some deal between Apple and Sony.

It probably works because you can mount the contents of a Memory Stick Duo in the PSP as a volume on the Mac OS X desktop when you connect the PSP to the Mac.

It's nice that the application reformats the playlists and converts the necessary formats. MP3 works but not MP4 audio (AAC). But my understanding is that the PSP supports MPEG4 video variants?

Mac OS X isn't suppose to support MPEG4/AVC until Tiger (10.4). And even then, it might not be the H.264 HP variant that Blu-Ray has adopted.

That iPSP thing as a shock to me after my post! But I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Apple licenses music through iTunes to play on non-iPod hardware, simply becuase there'll be a larger user base. I expect iTunes will eventually work on mobile phones as well with whatever generation of phone comes out with MP3 playback.

This process might be accelerated with the law suit aginst Apple as a monopoly on music malarkins, depending on how that rules.

I don't believe that software is in any way supported by Sony directly, so... We've already been expecting to see a lot of 3rd party games and applications pop up in the PSP's wake, so this just comes as a matter of course. Considering how long it took for Sony to drag its way kicking and screaming from ATRAC, I wouldn't expect them to abandon their own music store designs (which is basically what they'd be doing by making the PSP officially compatible with iTunes or its codec) instead of trying to use their PSP to support it.

Apple doesn't make money (I'm talking actual profit here, not woohoo, I made a penny today) from iTunes, it makes its money from the iPod. Unless Sony would give a big chunk of change for each PSP sold to Apple, Apple would most likely NOT allow iTunes and PSP to integrate and if it did that I'd expect Apple to license it to many more people than just Sony.

Motorola has a cellphone coming that is compatible with iTunes. I don't know how much Apple gets from each phone sold.

The post I replied to said hardware addon, and that would by neccessity connect to the USB slot.
I haven't heard anything about a hardware addon for TV. Tried looking on ve3d.ign.com as that original poster quoted from but couldn't find it. would there be any need for a hardware addon for receiving TV over a network though?
