PSN videos - any interest?

Dot50Cal

Regular
I found out last night that I could download videos from the PSN store and they are simply H.264 video files which can be played on the PC. Is there any interest for these trailers? If so I can host them for some people. The quality is undoubtedly better than any gamespot or IGN download versions ;)

They are 720p but appear to be using a lower bitrate than the movie trailers that are on the PSN. While they do show some artifacts like I said, the quality is better than GS or IGN videos.

Edit: Some are 1080p and high bitrate!

SAVE TARGET AS!!! Please dont share these past Beyond3d, I dont want to have to pay a ton for bandwidth this month.

I just read this on gamespot:

Our PlayStation 3 recognized MP4 and MPG files encoded in MPEG-4, H.264, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2. When we tossed in the Xvid and Divx codecs, both worked like a charm. The supported codecs did not work at all when we used AVI, MOV, and ASF file formats. Not surprisingly, WMV didn't work either.

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6161997/p-3.html

Could you verify this while you are at it??

Also, PSP Firmware 3.0 is out, so if you could look out for any PS1 emulation games on there, that'd be swell too. ;)

I dont own a PSP, I have a friend who does however so I suppose I can try to coax him into finding his :)

I just tested x264, even when sticking to the main profile without using B-Frames the PS3 says its unavailable to view :\

Ill test out the others in a sec though.

Update: It doesnt even show .avi files as corrupted data or whatever! Its like they dont even exist. So I guess thats false.

Dont work: Xvid, Divx 3.11, Divx 5, Quicktime, Quicktime AVC

Works: MPEG1, H264 AVC

Ill test more formats once the Warhawk trailer is downloaded and uploading.

Edit: You do know that they say on Gamespot that they wrapped the divx and xvid files in an avc wrapper, right?

Ah, that explains it a little. By the way, could you mention the file-size?

Done :)

A few more added, almost done with these ;) Genji is uploading now.

Are they different in content to what's been shown before? I'm guessing Lair is the super-fantastic E3 (or was it TGS?) showing with the realistic fire and autonomous NPc behaviour, right?

I havent been following game trailers as of late so Im fairly out of the loop on that. Some of the filenames tell you outright what event they are from though ;)

Genji is up, Untold Legends (1080p cinematic) is uploading. NBA (1080p , but looks upscaled BLECH) is coming soon as well as Calling all Cars and ..some other download game trailer.

thanx mate. so thats how mtorostorm looks in real hdtv format lol . i play my ps3@480 i .. damn i need a hdtv

You have to use the MP4-container, then it should work. AVI is not supported, as the gamespot article clearly says..

Works: MPEG1, H264 AVC
same here, you have to use MP4 for Xvid, and DivX 4/5 too. You can convert them losslessly from an AVI for example with MP4Box (or its GUI YAMB). Divx 3.11 can't work (without reencoding), as it's not MPEG-compatible. Quicktime (ASP+AVC) should also work if you output/convert them to the MP4-format.

Edit: You do know that they say on Gamespot that they wrapped the divx and xvid files in an avc wrapper, right?
sorry to be pedantic, but there is no such thing as a 'avc wrapper'. it either is in mp4, or it isn't (f.e. avi, mov, mkv, etc. aren't)

Heh, Well I havent gotten into h264 encoding much besides a quick rundown of x264 but the Gamespot article didnt mention they actually re-encoded it. I figured it was just a wrapper. Oh well, not an ideal situation at all then :\

Last video is up. + rep is appreciated ;)

MP4 IS a "wrapper", as you call it (normally it is called a container format). x264 can output natively to MP4, no reencoding required. and even if you already have your video in an avi, you don't have to reencode to convert it into a MP4 if it uses x264, xvid or divx (and compatible ones). this process is called transmuxing (= muxing from one container [avi] into another [mp4]), and it is 100% lossless, and very fast (only limited by your harddisk speed).

just to clear up the confusion. :D

EDIT:
so if you want to test your xvid, divx or x264 videos, just install YAMB (http://yamb.unite-video.com/Yamb-1.6.exe), select them in the input box, hit start and a few seconds later you have them in the nice, shiny, little mp4-format :)

Warhawk is surprising and interesting, the ground combat looks fun and frantic with lots of stuff happening all at once. Stylistically it reminded me a little of Battalion Wars. And then of course the flying stuff. Excellent ocean water, nice light.

Cash Guns Chaos ... err. The impression I get from that is Geometry Wars with graphics. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, I suppose the simple motivation here was to "match and maybe exceed" a very specific thing the competition offers.

Sadly I can't play the 1080p flicks properly. Might be a case of the 'puter being too lowly.

Anyway, big thanks and a manly hug for posting the goods!

I should mention Calling all Cars and Cash Guns Chaos are PSN only games (for now?). So it would make sense that they are simple ;) Thanks for the rep everyone, I have two bars now! yay!11
