PS3 parental controls confirmed

As expected, but anyways...

Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of minors from the effects of violent videogames with the announcement of in-built parental controls for its next generation PS3 console.

Sony joined Japan's biggest retailers, publishers and developers in a discussion with the Tokyo government last week, designed to establish a universal approach to the issue of violent videogames and their alleged associated effects on children.

Well it should be fairly easy to control games on PS3. There are a limtied number of them, and if Sony forces all developers to put a code in their games that says "no younger than 15", then all PS3 configured (by the parents) to only run games for under 15's will just not run that game.

Now, if we want to discuss how many parents will actually configure their children's PS3 to only run games in a certain age bracket, and more importantly how many kids will learn how to get round the system (doing a "system restore" or something of that sort to reset all settings to the default factory ones should do the trick), then let's discuss ;)

Good to know. I hadn't really thought about parental controls, but probably a good idea to have them. Of course, similar to some comments I made when the 360 crew announced their parental controls, I think that most parents won't even know it's there, let alone know how to implement it.

Not to say Sony and MS shouldn't include it of course.

Like the Xbox parental controls, the feature will go mostly unused. Why? Well because most parents ASSume that game consoles are children's toys and not educate themselves about the console. Others are not so technically inclined and won't use it. For example, how many parents actually make use of the V-chip? If you asked them about it, you'd mostly hear "V-what?"

But at least Sony will be protected from lawsuits from bad parents.

Doesn't the PS2 already have a parental control feature? I could swear it has it somewhere deep in the setup... or was it just for the DVD play?
The PSP has at least.

First I've heard of it. This news'll probably help PS3's image, but won't change much. Parents already walk into games stores and pick up 15/18 rated games for Little Jonny.

As it should be imo - meaning that I think it should be up to the parents to decide what games their kid can and cannot play.

maybe gta wont get as much flak from the politicians + soccer-moms this time around :p
if the kids cant play it, theres nothing to argue about. if the parent unlocks the game for them, then it's their fault.

Ahh.. But that's a different scenario, isn't it? Has anybody said that the PS3 will come with parental controls automatically enabled? That you would then have to somehow turn them off in order to play M rated games?

Of course, I guess its pointless because if the "adults" had the ability to turn them off, the little kiddies would find the same way.

I guess I was just wondering if there was any benefit, even if merely from a PR standpoint, of setting the default adult settings to "blocked", thereby forcing somebody to disable them in order to play adult content.

Meh still won't matter. Most of these politicians just like to have their time in the lime light. People don't care about self responsibility they believe that these games are ruining our culture. Just like the NBA has changed the dress code to give the image that the basketball players are not thugs and drug dealers.:???:

Pretty pathetic right?
