PS3 on monitors

Well, it either scales properly from 720p (in 720p games) or scales up from that whatever-the-heck-I'm-getting-for-whatever-reason-"1750x1000"-resolution on the PS3 side, but everything is hunky-dorey at all times from the PC, so... it's bugging me.

That's not the "I don't detect HDCP" downsampled image, because that's supposed to even be under a 720p res, is it not? And heck, are you even ABLE to get HDMI without HDCP? Heh...

Confusing. -_-

i bought a cheapass ACER 2216W . what i found odd is that it gives black bars left and right with WARHAWK. all other things i tried where nice and fullscreen (limited testing ) i could set it to 480P 720P only. no 1080i 1080p .
Not surprising, since the native resolution is 1680×1050... I went for the smallest monitor that could at least fit 1080p, and that seems to be in the 24" range (as a minimum) at this point, no matter who you're going with.
is warhawk rendering in a special way, or is my monitor displaying this game in an odd way?
Black bars ONLY on the left and right...? But NONE on the top and bottom? That's normally a "trying to fit non-widescreen content on a widescreen display" affect, where it scales up to a vertical match (going, say, from 720 lines to 1050) but wouldn't have the horizontal lines to display the whole image, but in this case you should be going down slightly from a 16:9 aspect ratio to your 16:10. If that were all that's going on, I'd expect it to be giving you lines on the top and bottom, so I don't know what's up with your settings... Warhawk give you any options to play with?

Of course it might just be very late, and I'm all strung out. :p

What settings have you enabled on your PS3? I mean out of 720p, 1080i, 1080p ... and what happens if you try playing a BluRay disc at any of these resolutions? Are there differences between what you get when you run the XMB and when you run specific games?

Guess we have to fix it to one set of tests. But it can be tricky. I know my Samsung accepts 1920x1080, scales it to full-screen, but then still complains that it's a resolution that it doesn't support. Click that message away, and there are no further problems. Kind of silly, eh?

i did some limited testing cause the day after i bought the monitor i went to milan (still there..) so but the only res i can choose is 480P and 720P i get an error message for 1080p and all the Interlaced options .
maybe i try some more tests this weekend when i'm back home.

in the end, i only paid 200euro for it so i dont clomplain that much :p

Right, but THAT isn't the question. The Lair upscaling issue is one thing, but it should be no surprise that you can't get to any 1080 mode... Your monitor has UNDER that amount of pixels. How would you expect to display 1920x1080 pixels on a 1680x1050 monitor? It's not like you can paste them on the frame like sticky-notes. ;)

But that's the thing ... it works great! The only downside is the pop-up message you have to click away that warns you it's a 'non-optimal resolution' and I should change it. In the manual it basically says 1920x1080p isn't supported. But the net result is that it accepts and scales the 1920x1080p properly.

Sorry, I didn't see your last reply to me. My last reply was to hey69 specifically, where he was talking about not being able to get 1080i/p modes at all on his 1680x1050 monitor. ;)

Going back...

I have all the modes allowed turned on, and it TELLS me "Current Output Resolution 1080p." It just... isn't. At 1:1 pulldown, it displays 480p properly, 720p properly, but anything 1080p gets fit into that... well... 1750x1000 (or so) box. Then if I put it to 4:3 mode, it scales THAT up.

I don't actually have a BR disk to test it's movie playing on, but it works the same way with DVD upscaling. It'll show 480p fine, it will "double" fine, but if you go to the "maximum" which should be 1080p... it stops at that random barrier.

I get that message on occasion too, but mainly on PC side. (Lots of games don't support 1920x1200, so I end up playing them at 1600x1200 with the occasional bitch. ;) ) I'm not sure if I've seen it give it to me yet with the PS3. I just haven't seen the PS3 properly output at 1080p, and it's mystifying. -_-

...and I don't know anyone offhand who has a 1080p HDTV for me to test on, so that will have to wait.

One additional thing... in Tekken 5 it seems to be cutting off the top, as I notice the "FREE PLAY" and "PRESS 1P START" and the like have the tops of their letters cut off. Is that just an artifact of Tekken 5 in general, or symptomatic of what's going on with the PS3-to-monitor connection? (Edit: Tekken, seems to be. I set it so that it could only display in 720p, and it was still cutting off the letters while being placed nicely in that 1280x720 box.)

Check the video options in Warhawk. By default the game uses a some overscan correction, but you can adjust that as needed in the options to make the game fill the full screen.

ah didnt knew you could change video options in the game.I will try to check it out this weekend. I miss gaming.. been from home too long now
